... 7 seater). Very nice, although Tom was hoping we had been given the Ferrari parked in the carpark instead! An uneventful drive to Ascona, stopping only at Tenero at a discount shoe barn to buy Tom some shoes without holes! A promenade along the esplanade at Ascona, in the sun, was just wonderful. We had delicious pizzas for lunch (G had lasagna, as always, and I had polenta con funghi - yum!) and a walk through the cobblestone streets, ending up at the toy store where we saw an ...

Day 274 1 hr, 1 km With the steep, wooded mountainside to my left and a valley that is quickly narrowing to my right it's only a few hundred meters and I'm in the next town, Messe. I know that the uphill climb is getting close, including my big goal: to cross the Splugenpass from Italy to Switzerland on foot. I know it was just planted here for the warm months, but seeing a banana tree in someone's yard just feels really unappropriate. C'mon folks, this is the ...

Some of the barns are in disrepair--but you can still see that a lot of love went into building ...

Day 273 5 hrs, 10.4 kms Day Totals: 16 hrs, 37.4 kms I take a little detour to snag one more town today. As I wander through this frazione of Samolaco, a husky older gentleman greets me from outside his barn, my third interesting encounter of the day. He tells me about his life... growing up in the mountains here, spending much of his life out in the plains working, and now coming back to his home village. I guess that's the reality of these ...

... up the hill with fabulous views over the lake and mountains. Then came the search for our B&B which we eventually found after ringing the owner. 153 steps up hill from the lake road and we were there. That is to say we still had to go up to the second floor. The views were incredible though and made the climb well worth it. Our little balcony (big enough for two) had the best views in the house and you can hear the church ...
