Bikaner, Rajasthan, India tonicastells... This means that a lot of people have affairs, which really surprised me as it is totally against their religion.

When we arrived in Bikaner we went to the Fort, which was incredible. The art work on the walls and ceilings is amazing. One of the Guards took us into some private living quarters too and showed us lots of windows with spy holes. The fort is undefeated and has lots of stairs to the top level where people would hide and fire their weapons from ...

Bikaner, Rājasthān, India seorajeshkumar... Locals believe that it is particularly auspicious if one of these holy rats runs over your bare feet - I was doubly lucky - I think as two of the rats ran over my feet. This evening, we travel by camel cart to a nearby desert farm where we formed part of the entertainment. We were dressed in saris, and punjabi suits with the jewellery and flowers and treated to a mega feast, and dancing and singing from one of the local families ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India gaynorlizb... on the guide whilst ogling at us! We were only asked for our photo twice whilst at the fort. The audio guide was actually pretty good (and the very posh Indian male voice was somewhat amusing). The Fort was very impressive. Like many of the older tourist sights we've been to in India, it was being renovated in places. It was different to most forts in that it was built on flat ground rather than on a hill. It was designed to combine the roles of both ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India tomandchrissy... bowls of milk and squibbling over the best spots to curl up. At first glance you'd think there weren't that many, then as your eyes become adjusted you realise that actually, there are rats peeping at you from all over the place. I'm not sure how temple etiquette would have received my giving the priests a lecture on how to look after a temple full of rats, but they badly needed a bit of advice on ratty diet. As rats are revered they're given only the best things - which ...
Bikaner, India hobnob... is less prevalent, but worth it for the temple experience and also for the lovely people we met and talked with. We quickly moved on by sleeper bus, southward to Bikaner in Rajasthan, where we've now been for four days. On Tuesday morning we set out for a two day and one night desert safari on camels! The heat was intense, the views magnificent, the camels huge, but the real show stopper was the night sky as we slept out under the stars. We ...
Bikaner, India gengaontheroadMy watch read 6.05. I had obviously slept soundly on the overnight bus from the steaming plains of the Punjab to the (hopefully!) drier heat of Bikaner in Rajasthan... I knew that I was heading for a desert region but I still did a double-take as I looked through the window of the now stationary bus: the rising sun was low on the distant horizon, lighting up a vast desert landscape, and a camel peered in at me, while ...
Bikaner, India fishtails04... that we have visited. Afterwards, we visited a local museum where they had artifacts from daily life in the late 1800's. From there, we had lunch and then dessert at a local pastry shop. The cake slice was $0.25 and very yummy!! We did a bit of internet and headed back to our hotel. Thursday, we had breakfast then took a rickshaw into the old city to visit a couple of the Jain Temples and wander through the various ...
Bikaner, India vannhansenAbout one week in in India and it has quickly become both the highlight and one of the most frustrating place on the trip. A big part of the frustration is having to deal with Internet that keeps on crashing, thus deleteting full passages of wonderful text that otherwise would be posted to a fabulous blog entry. Not to mention that all connections are painfully, excrutiatingly, Canada postal service speed, slow. So to help maintain sanity, this entry will be brief, and ...
