Onward to Angkor Wat

Battambang to Siem Reap to Angkor Wat: Please check back when I get some photos up. There are some really good ones, I think. What a day. Started at 0600 with moto ride to another hotel to buy boat ticket. Got to "Port of Battambang" about 0630. To get to boat walked down fairly steep steel steps maybe 100 -120 feet (with spaces between - carrying large backpack) to the boat we would take to Siem Reap. We climbed aboard the semi-crowded boat and waited for 0700. Shortly before then a police o...

To The Wats

We've moved on! We caught a boat this morning very near our hotel. It took us down the river to Siem Reap, home of Angkor Wat. The boat ride was quite fun - even if it was 5 hours. We passed many little villages, some floating villages (where the houses floated on the water), and many many children and fishermen. Parts of it, I doubted whether we would make it through (crossing vast stretches of water that were covered completely with water plants). We stopped several times to clean the rotor...

Angor Wat What What!!!

When we arrived in Siem Reap we notice that Siem Reap was a lot quieter , less polluted and tranquil than Phenom Penh. Though there was still plenty to do there Siem Reap being THE major toursit attraction in Cambodia , because of Angor Wat (group of immense temples that represent some of the finest representations of Cambodian history, artistry and civilization.) It was nice coming from what could be considered the low point in Khmer history to what is one of the high points of the civilizat...

Damit I can't speak Khmer!!!

Well here I am in Siem Reap I've been up since 4:30 to catch the sunrise at Angor Wat. Incredible!!!! But I digress let me bring it back a few days. Nuri and I left Vietnam longing for more, we were only there for a day!!! We bid farewell to Thanh are gracious hostess and boarded the bus to Phenom Penh Cambodia . The ride was pretty pleasant, we got to see a good bit of the Vietnamese and Cambodian countryside (though I slept for a good part of it). At the Viet-Cambodian border I noticed a ma...

Happy Times in Siem Reap

Hi Everybody! I must say that all went well on the trip here. However, I think I picked up a bit of scurvy on the long journey to the Japans. When I reached landfall, I discovered that all of my hair had fallen out. Also, my teeth all seem loose. So I finally reached Bangkok after many hours of travel. I arrived an hour late, so I took a taxi to the hotel I had booked, the Grand China Princess. It seemed like an alright place, but I was only there for 2 hours before I had to leave for the bus...

Angkor Wat

Well we finaly made it to Siem Reap and the temple complex here in Cambodia. It was a bus ride to remember, however; not the least of which was the guy next to us snacking on crickets the whole time. Oh, and he spits... I dont know, the legs onto the floor of the bus...gross. We also witnessed the cooking and eating of gigantic spiders at a rest stop alon the way. Ahh, Cambodian cooking... All in all its been great. We spent the day afoot, looking at ruins and taking many pictures. Kelly was ...

48 hours in Siem Reap

So Saturday we spent entertaining ourselves trying to kill time in Vientiane in the constant rain. Easier said than done. I don't think Vientiane is exactly reknowned for its indoor activities, but we managed. 2 games of tragic indoor bowling, 4 short and fairly vintage French films with subtitles (the verdicts still out on the quality but we were desperate for entertainment), and an "overpriced" (by Laos standards) full body massage at Papaya Spa, all in all which managed to take up most of ...

This doesn't look like Phnom Pen...

You know, before we left home we had such a lovely itinerary. It charted out a grand overland tour through south east ASA, traveling though each country in turn, making logical border crossings, minimizing travel expense. But once again, as we did when we decided to fly from Bangkok to Hanoi, we ditched the plan. Uninspired by the prospect of another big Asian city, about an hour after posting our previous Travel Pod entry we ditched traveling overland to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, ...

12/02/09: Early flight from Bangkok to Cambodia. Change of country again..new culture. At the arrival at the airport, we get or e-visas checked by a bunch of guys in uniforms who take their jobs very seriously but everything is ok. We get a tuk tuk to our guesthouse, just outside the city centre. Cambodia is sooo warm and humid: the tiredness hit us. We decided to take it easy, walking around town and make our plans for the future days to come. It definitely looks poorer than Thailand, except...

Aah Siam Reap!! Finally up river for about 6 hours from Phom Penh to Siam Reap-I had visions of dreamily cruising through the jungle slowly!!-wrong-I should have taken the advice of the guesthouse manager who told me it was going to be a waste of time and money. But I had been determined to travel that way-well 6 hours later cruising through an enormous lake where you couldnt see either side of it and after sitting with a german who became progressively drunk on board a boat more like a cigar ...
