At the entrance at the south of the complex, there are 5 entrances in a line; a larger central entrance flanked by 2 others either side. The central entrance has a marble road which runs from outside the City walls into the Palace and lies precisely central. There were strict rules to follow when people entered the Forbidden City, entering through the central tunnel was the emperors' exclusive privilege, even the empresses were allowed to go through the opening ...
... There was nothing planned for us for the rest of the day, so we hung out for a while and rested our aching bodies. After about an hour of sitting around, a few of us decided that we wanted to go walk on the wall. One of the hosts told us a shortcut to get to a section of the wall that you could walk on, so about five of us headed out and the rest stayed behind. The hike to the wall took about twenty minutes. The section of the wall ...
Beijing, China lrgravesWe arrived in Beijing early in the morning on the sleeper train; thankfully the rooms at the hotel were ready so we could get a few more hours kip before our day's itinerary. Before regrouping we took the metro to the Silk Street Market to check out the shopping we had been recommended by Sylvia from the India trip. It was a good recommendation, hundreds of stalls selling everything from DVD's, bags, clothes, jewelry, silks, watches, sunglasses all at knock down prices with crazy ...
Beijing, China shieldsontour... sad, but the outside parts of the zoo had lots of space for them to move around at least. After that, Sue and I tried to hail a cab, but couldn't get one for the longest time, so we decided to walk to the nearest subway station. On the way ,we stumbled upon a very large public square where people were rollerblading and many were flying kites - both young and old. A nice old man came up to Sue and I and offered us to fly his little kite - a little one shaped ...
Beijing, China mezzoloona... putting pure sugar in your mouth-- not unless I have the hiccups, thank you. We took advantage of the cafeteria's A/C for about two hours before we rode through hutong maze in order to find a small, out-of-the-way place known for its chicken wings. These are not spicy buffalo wings served with a side of celery sticks and ranch. In fact, not wings at all, rather skewers of chicken hearts, breasts and livers. Yum! We wait for Thev's girlfriend ...
Beijing, China rachaelb... sadly just missing the fun of the evening ceremony). The place we are staying is great, and we have met a few Scots & English folk here to share travel stories with. It's interesting hearing how other people have perceived places we have been very differently. We will attempt to get a bus to the great wall tomorrow, then plan a bike a ride around the city and visiting (yes another one!) a temple somewhere else in the city on the next day. Certainly plenty to ...
Beijing, China barryandemmai've been in china for 5 days now...and already i can't quite remember when i wasn't here. i guess that it's not too unusual for such an absorbing experience to bring about that kind of sensation. the entirety of those 5 days has been spent in beijing, although i'm leaving tonight for dalian (east of beijing on the coast) on an overnight train. beijing is a city full of glaring contradictions. shiny new buildings are everywhere...and scattered about their feet are ancient temples ...
Beijing, China tofudan... It amused them no end to see us turn the tables on them and point our camera at their group (PIC). Climbing the hilled areas of the palace gardens we delved into a much quieter, serene section with very few other tourists to be seen. We wandered along the tree-lined pathways and discovered the occasional bandstand-style building lurking amongst the landscaped shrubs. In one building we came across an old local guy playing a long wind instrument...alone ...
