... we always say we're from California instead of America or the US) and then proudly announced that there was a Greek Orthodox monastery at "Shasta", of course meaning Mount Shasta in Northern California. Maybe some day we'll have to visit there, too.

... hikes in the Vikos Gorge area we were able to contract the car for another day though the agent seemed genuinely disappointed by this decision. It wasn't until later that we realized that she probably used the car when it wasn't rented but we were happy to have it for another day of exploration in these amazing mountains and gorges. Our dinner and evening in town was pleasant and we returned to our terrific boutique hotel in time to turn in early for the next day's hiking.

... there inside or out, except for one elderly caretaker who let us in. We were really impressed by the Byzantine artwork that we saw and were charmed by the enthusiasm of this old gentleman who seemed genuinely thrilled to show us around (without speaking one word of English) and was pleased that we were enjoying the paintings and the frescoes.

... are plenty of weapons and an old apparently American spy plane which came down in Albania during the communist regime. I spend an hour or so wandering around. There is an old tank that catches my attention or maybe it is a current army model. After the castle, I head to a couple of old original Ottoman houses. The Ethnographic museum is excellent with some ladies who helpfully show me around.

... trip, was the Stone Forest which is not far from Monodendri. It is an area with scattered autumn trees and dotted amongst them are hillocks of stone of differing sizes and shapes.....some quite large, some quite small, some random shaped and some shaped like beehives, all different from each
other and yet because of their substance all the same......They are truly amazing geological formations of horizontally layered stone, possibly some sort of slate maybe? They are wonderful ...
