Effervescent Marrakech

If you think you’re well rehearsed in the choreography required to
navigate Oxford Street at rush hour on a Friday night, then try any
street in the medina of Marrakech. Dropped off by our taxi from the
airport, we found ourselves wading upstream as cyclists, donkey carts,
the odd car and a multitude of mopeds (often carrying whole families of
father, mother and child) all share the same three-metre road, forcing
you into a series of exotic acrobatic positions. After t...

... the medina to the Bahia Palace which had lots of cats roaming
around and was very unassuming from the outside (something that Moroccans
appear to love to do). But once inside it was an amazing building with
intricately carved wooden arches, beautiful ceramic tiles, cool breezy rooms
and sunny courtyards with lots of orange trees. Unfortunately lots of tour
groups too but you had to pick your way around them and try to block the sound
out. It was a beautiful place ...

THE ONLY WAY IS UUUUUUUUUUUP BABY....

From the fun flats of Marrakech...we made our way to the High Atlas mountains for well...mountains of magnificent hiking and views.

Jebel Toubkal stands at 4200m above sea level and at that is the highest most point in northern Africa and also a bit of a mission! We made it up the mighty mountain in a few days and did some sleeping, sun burning and Scrabble in there as well. An absolutely incredible adventure!

Back down and all set to embark on a road trip to Fez!

Marrakesh sidetrip was a great decision!

... immigration paper (he junks the duplicate form). Susan’s turn. We’re through Customs!

Our bags are not on the carrousel. Even the people from the other plane have all gone. We split up to retrace and I spot Susan’s bag on a carrousel that’s not running…..there’s my bag, alone, just before it disappears under the curtain….I walk down the carrousel (they better not start this ...

... for about 20 minutes of work. Ben took out $5 and the boy completely refused it. I told him this was all he would get, so he could take it or leave it. He scowled and accepted the cashAs I repeatedly witnessed this disappointment, I began to form this question: Are they glad we (American tourists) are there spending our money? Two possible answers: YES - We are customers that they cannot reach unless we travel to them ...

Marrakech #2

... we are getting more and more lost but then, all of the sudden, we find ourselves just before the inconspicuous door of Bahia Palace at 14:58...so cool;). This palace (10dh) is a nice arabic residence with some gardens inside, worth seeing it. Near of Bahia one can find El Bahi Palace. The ruins of the palace are more like only square walls with some green inside, but it's still somehow a very atractive place! The best thing to do is climb to the terrace, where one can enjoy a ...

... it isn't used to bending. My client confesses later he is certain he will emerge with a sprain or a slipped disk. Now it is my turn, and I wag my finger at Ahab and tell him he is an evil man and that he has to go easier on me. I ask my client to tell him to be gentle in French, and then I submit. The next few minutes are a blur in my mind. I remember screaming several times, and imagine the other men in the place are quite amused. I see now why they don't pay for the full ...
