I much enjoyed my stay in the cultural centre of Bali, seeing the surrounding rice fields and temples and experiencing some of the local customs. Being less touristic then Kuta, I also had opportunity to get a better impression of the culture and people. Together with Mara and Tabe, who I knew from Amsterdam and met in Ubud, I decided to arrange for a trip to the Gili islands which lie north ...

People kept telling me the upstairs was best but I suspected they just wanted the foreigners displaying too much skin out of the way. The fact that the boat broke down on the second dive summed it up really. Because of the poor diving we spent the majority of our time in the ...

... go before the public boat was due to leave, or so we thought. Actually it had left 20 minutes ago, we had been given the wrong schedule and the next boat was in 3 hours. Surprise surprise! Bangsal is a squalid horrible place full of people that would rob you blind given the chance. So we decided to charter a boat at a rather exorbitant price. So lots more tatty money was exchanged and broad smiles received. The crossing was fairly rough with the boat lilting ...
