59 Fourth Avenue Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa
Our adventures in Johannesburg began. We decided to take a public bus into central Johannesburg - the Central Business District or CBD. According to the Lonely Planet guide to South Africa, you could get an open-topped hop-on hop-off City Slicker bus that would allow you to tour the city, getting on and off where you wanted. We felt that would be a great way to get a feel for Johannesburg. First we wanted to get a public bus into the city and take the City Slicker bus from there. Answers to o...
Johannesburg, South Africa pachiToday we visited Soweto with a guide recommended by Melville House, Mandy Mankazana of Imbizo Tours. There were shanty houses like those in Chile but also middle class homes in the same areas. The original barracks used for the men who worked in the mines are still there. They are now used by families but do not yet have running water and electricity. As I am a teacher, Mandy took us to visit her former elementary school, which she had not visited since she had left. We were warmly greeted by...
Johannesburg, South Africa pachiLotta was waiting for me when I came through customs at the Johannesburg airport as her flight had arrived a half an hour earlier. Meeting an old friend for the first time in years is a great way to start an adventure! She had also already arranged for a taxi. A quick but expensive taxi ride to The Melville House, a much recommended B & B. The ride was quick because it was early on Sunday and therefore the mass of Johannesburg's cars were having a late day and were out of harm's way. We w...
Johannesburg, South Africa pachiI could not avoid Johannesburg. I could not on my first trip to South Africa seven years ago, and this time either, even though my main destination both times was Cape Town. And I still do not like Johannesburg. To get the cheapest airfare to South Africa from North America, which usually costs close to $2,000.00, I figured out a thrifty, but complex way. I used my mileage to exchange a free ticket to Europe. Then I purchased an open-jawed ticket (my journey started in South Africa and ended ...
Johannesburg, South Africa whk2006... I had no idea where to start on this one, but I decided it was better (for me) to start too low rather than too high. Despite remembering that it took us about 30 minutes to get to the museum, I got in and asked the driver if he would take us for 80 rand. He just laughed. I quickly bumped up to 100, but he continued to laugh. I next tried 150 – his response was, I will have to cut off my head to do it for that price, but that’s fine. He said he ...
Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa forbes.thompson... take my advice and get tickets to Robin Island well in advance. But as usual Chapmans peak, Cape point and the other spots were all beautiful. We also stopped in Simonstown at the penguins - they were so cute. Called Cape Jack Ass penguins - and I am serious they are really called that. I must say I did think eating out in CT was really expensive especially the restaurants at the Waterfront. After 3 nights in CT it was time to take the long road ...
Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa elmab... attached to everyones carry on luggage. Some is under me, some is wrapped around me, apparently my appearance will ward off thieves. Great. An hour or so before we board to Maputo, I have one of my best ideas yet. When faced with the prospect of flying and vomiting again, I take some Gravol. I am not sure how much I have in my system from the flight but I decide to take 3 ish tabs. Upside no barfing.....down side very very very stoned. Oh well live and learn.
Johannesburg, South Africa winsomewanderer... comes along and unlocks to let you into the store. It is really quite weird to be so security conscious. Already feels quite confining. From about noon my cousin's husband and her boys were starting the food for the braai. We had appies of "sassaties" (this is a Malay dish, I think, adopted into the South African culture over time), biltong (like beef jerky though was, I think, a wild beast), and marinated chicken for appies as well as boersvors ...

J´burg, South Africa flowergyaru... day. 32oC ahhhh! Rather different to freezing January temperatures back home. We landed, and everyone simultaneously lost a layer, revealing to me that it had been a general consensus not to wear the Project Trust T-shirt. As we stepped through to the arrival area, everyone realised it may have been wise for someone to wear it. As it was, Ann was wearing one so we identified her first. Having said that, she ...
