Joe: We spent the morning walking through the Oamaru Public Gardens. There were ponds with ducks, a stream, and lovely flowers galore and some magnificent trees that spread weeping branches around themselves until they formed an enclosed space around the whole tree. Stunning countryside but no penguins

This was a proper town and I finally found a pair of trainers and struck a little luck when instead of charging me $89.99, they went through as slippers and I paid $20.00!

Once in Oamaru, we struggled to find a campsite but really wanted to stay there because at dusk you can view the penguins coming home. We eventually found a really shoddy site about 20 minutes outside of town.
