Survived Guayaquil....

We spent a sticky, smoggy day in Ecuador's largest, and most hectic city, Guayaquil. We no longer think Panama City cab drivers are crazy...in fact, they are downright cautious compared to Guayaquil cabbies.....of course the Panamanians have the added benefit of lines painted between lanes. We did have a nice walk along the Malecon, a nicely done boardwalk area along the river, where we gawked at the boats, had some fried patacones (plantains), some strangely bland, but salty seafood, and ice...

Low Cool

Guayaquil: Ecuador's largest city, with a population of around two million, is not renowned for its beauty. Originally nicknamed "Pearl of the Pacific", it's not clear why. Architecturally practical, rather than aesthetic, the city has none of the colonial charm of the country's capital, Quito. It's on the coast, but remains the country's main port, rather than a beach resort. Most of the hotels are filled with business travellers, the unlucky tourists get to spend a night here on their way o...

... my stop), last stop Quito, Ecuador for those who had to endure 3 take offs and landings!!!
By the way, there was a dog, yes a dog on my flight - apparently small dogs are allowed. God knows when and where it peed???
I took a short taxi ride to my Hostel having negotiated the cost in Spanish (big pat on the back for me!) and it cost me just $5. The hostel whilst clean and friendly (watch out for the big dog with the wrinkly face as you enter the gates - he´s a softy ...

... countries but they wanted an extortionate 17 usd each for them, double the US price and nearly 3 times the European price. We have decided to wait, the maps we have will get us to lima then we'll try for a Peru map there, and in la Paz for a Bolivian.

The more time we spend in Guayaquil the more we like it. It's parks and open spaces spaces are wonderful and very well used. you only have to sit for 5 minutes before someone comes along selling ...

... 8211; my Luggage. Present my passport and my luggage tags.

I was with two female friends for translation and transport purposes.

“Sorry Sir, we need the Lady whose name is on the tags to sign the collection”

In my mind I was furious. We had the paperwork, the identification of me and the luggage, the keys for the luggage, and the luggage were labeled with my name. They had the luggage, the supervisors report explaining what happened, but no ...

Back to Guayaquil after crazy time in Montanita

... found a hostel about a block from the beach called David's Hostel, which had a room with three beds, that we were able to book for (at first $5 dollars each, but after I bargained) $4 dollars each. After a nice swim in the ocean (at nighttime, since by then it was around 9pm or so), we went back to our room, had some showers in the (shared) shower, and then went out to walk around looking for where to dance. We settled on a cabin themed ...

Relax and surf on the coast

... a open air market where you can bargain any possible good: we personally bought some clothes and DVD's of films that are still to be published in Europe...and they say South America is behind! After that we headed to Montanita, a well-known surfer/hippie beach to get some S&S (sun and surf). Great waves and a very nice atmosphere: it looks like only young people are allowed in ...

Buses, buses and more buses.

... it was all really quick. I was however the only gringo on the bus which meant both the guard and the official who also travelled with us were very considerate and made sure everything was fine the whole way through. So after the nightmare stories you hear it was one of the easiest crossings I´ve had. Arrived in Mancora at 5.30 am and found a lovely hostal on the beach which is basic to say the least but i had a lovely sleep this morning before hitting the beach ...

Guayaquil

... cruz on by, not even flinching, pretending these people don't even exist. I practically have to get into their life story before I feel confident that our encounter hasn't left me with the reputation as a deadest a$%&hole. Why I care eludes me, and at times keeps me up at night in a deep state of pensiveness.... Walk on by, just walk on by...you can do it.... "Hey there, so good to see you, what are you selling today, I love to buy some but ...

Assembly

... it was indeed a priviledge to attend. As there were alot of pioneers there, and the open convention centre is at Bethel, coffee was available. Haha. The program was indeed thought provoking. If you have not had the District Assembly yet, I suggest you make plans to be there all three days with plenty of sleep before hand. It is an experience not to be missed and all should attend, even if you are not a Witness. I look forward to going again at the ...
