Goodbye Paris, Hello Lille

... the amazing Louvre, with the Mona Lisa and thousands of other pieces of art, as well as the Chateau de Versailles. Anyways, Paris was amazing, and now I'll be in Lille for a couple of days..

My European trip is coming to an end in about 2 weeks or so, when I leave from Dusseldorf on the 8th of December to Fort Myers Florida. But before that I still have a bit of Netherlands and Belgium to enjoy..

Back to London via Ypres and Calais

... well I think, travelling over 1400 miles (or over 2300km) and the car ran faultlessly! Overall it was an awesome holiday, we all had heaps of fun and all said we'd like to do it again. The next one is in early May, and is going to be a motorsport themed event, running through France to Monaco, ending at the Monaco Grand Prix. I'd really like to go on this rally, but won't be able to as I'll be on the Topdeck training trip!

Adventures on a ghost train...

... else trying to find out if they're British as well (hey, that's me!), and look quite defensive when somebody else sits next to them (hey, that's me as well!). They then get out an English book and try to look very superior because they speak another language. (I do that sometimes.)
A lot of French people, particularly early in the morning, sit down and close their eyes and somehow magically wake up when it's their stop and run off the train. I don't know how they can do that ...

In Flanders Fields...

We went to Ypres on the suggestion of my dad. Ypres is located in Flanders and was a central battle ground during WWI. The town of Ypres seemed to be right in the midst of the fight and was almost completely destroyed in bombings and fires. It is also in this area that the battles of Pashchendale took place. It was one of the most deadly and greusomome places to fight in WWI and many young Canadians lost their lives there.

We got a ...

Being a tourist...

This week I have had the chance to finally be a tourist and explore my city! I planned to travel and explore France during this holiday but as it turned out I couldn't afford to do that, and there was a lot of Lille that I had yet to see (and that is still true!).

The Musée de la Piscine in Roubaix, just north of Lille on the metro, is a fantastic museum which I took my parents to. It goes by two names: La Piscine and Musée d'Art et ...

Aussi occupé que d'un castor

... Toussaint holiday began at 5.30 on Friday, and Erin went home for the break. I hadn't planned to go home until Christmas and so I'm determined to stick to it, so I will have to apartment to myself for a week or so. I'm looking forward to visits from mum and dad and from Bridget and in between visitors I am planning to fill my schedule with cultural visits or as one of the teachers put it at school today: "On peut voir et apprecier notre belle région."

Every story has a start... This is mine.

... the ceremony was amazing. Being surrounded by that many Aussies really made me miss home - and our accent. It was really moving to be at the site of battle, on exchange, and made me proud to be Australian. Afterwards we had breakfast with the soldiers and family, and took part in a parade. We then went to about 5 other war memorials, and by 5pm I was buggered. ANZAC day in France was yet another experience I won't forget. 9-10th May, 2009: A bunch of us exchange students ...

Nothing But Candlelight Dinners for Us

Spent two days drifting through the most romantic city in Belgium, or so we were told. Couples were definitely the predominant group here. After Montreal I thought I'd seen it all with their poutine and mayonnaise on their fries, but how little did I know. Curry ketchup and about 15 other flavors I've gone ...

Chocolate...feel like Üder from the Simpsons

... Melbourne, and Jill from NZ. The towns amazing. All cobbled street and little 'old village' houses. The market square is pretty, like a medieval town. There's so many chocolate stores, I'm in heaven. I was gonna try and be good, but screw that, I want chocolate! There's little churches everywhere and buildings that look like churches, and in our attempt to find one that had Michelangelo's 'Madonna and Child' in it, we managed to ...
