Slowing to Laos Speed

We
found a cheap flight so instead of busing our way into Laos we are
flying. The landing was spectacular because the small airport of
Luang Prubang is surrounded by lush green hills. Our original plan
was to stay in Luang Prabang for a couple of days and then head up
north and trek around. Now that we are here – the laid back
easy-going atmosphere – such a change from Vietnam and Cambodia
have won us over and we are going to relax here for awhile.

Elephant Ride!

Laos
is a country of forest – it has a small population and most of the
people (80% according to what we've read) live an agrarian
subsistence village lifestyle and there are numerous areas in Laos
that do not have any human habitation.

Today
we went walking through the forests and paddling up and down the Khan
River. Everywhere we went we saw Laos men and women working the
fields using the same tools that their great-great grandparents
probably u...

Back to Luang Prabang

Welcome to the Jungle Today I basically retraced my steps and took a sawngthaew back to Tha Suang and slowboat back to Luang Prabang. The sawngthaew left later than expected, took longer than expected, and was much fuller than on the way to Hongsa. It took us 2½ hours on the way back due to a combination of rain the previous night, toilet stops and breakdowns. There was also a man throwing up off the back of the truck virtually the entire time, which caused much laughter. He was the only Engl...

Laos, with a silence 'S'.

We safely touch down in Laos. Our first experience of their officialdom is having to pay an extra dollar per visa as overtime payment for the staff. Haven't they heard of working shifts? We then share a taxi into the quiet town of Luang Prabang. It is nigh on deserted, the empty streets dimly lit and filled with Wats ( buddhist monastries ). The next day we walk the main street that runs through this peninsula, wedged between the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers. The place is stuck in a past age, i...

Jewel of the Mekong - Luang Prabang

'Jewel of the Mekong'; Luang Prabang, Laos: December 23rd - 27th 2007 Our first impressions of Luang Prabang are mixed. It is full of western travelers, guesthouses, hotels and restaurants and appears a bit 'glitzy' but at the same time it is also stunningly pretty. Small, tidy backyards with blossoming flowers, neat gardens, winding alleys, beautiful temples and French colonial architecture are all wrapped up into one intoxicating package. However, now is not the time for sight seeing; after...

The Road to the End...

... the price of $18, and made my way to my room. Exhausted, I slept until past noon and spent the day walking around the city. I had yet another massage, this time Swedish, and had a manicure ($3). The next day I flew to Kuala Lumpur where I spent the night in the same hostel I'd stayed at during my last two times in K.L. I had dinner at street stalls in China Town and watched a movie before heading to bed on my very last night in Asia.

I flew home on November 4. My total travel time ...

Louang
Phabang

Louang Phabang was my first real taste of Laos and it was a
pleasant one, the people were very friendly and seemed to be more
genuine and less cynical than there Thai neighbours, probably from a
lack of exposure to us sometimes morally corrupt farlangs.
The Market was particularly good ,with some masterpieces going for
pittance the American lad from the boat Brian Croomes I was sharing a
Hostel with picked up ...

Land-locked Loas

... we visited a Wat and rode around the outskirts of the town. We also climbed to a Wat on the top of a hill and saw some stunning views over the countryside of Luang Prabang Province. In the evening we looked around the extensive night market and I bought a beer Lao T-shirt. We went for a few drinks but all the bars close at 11pm, so we went to the only place which stays open till 2am which is the local bowling alley. We shared a lane and had a couple of games with an Israeli ...

Laos ~ land of no atms, yet always a millionaire

We headed to an incredibly beautiful part of the country on the nam ou river surrounded by large limestone carst mountains and extremely dense jungle. We boated upriver an hour to a village called muang ngoi which is now adorned with bungalows on the river for the many backpackers that head there to relax, read and smoke pot in hammocks. It was really nice after being in stressful, loud, obnoxious China for two months. My ears ...
