... of the night we got our answer. When saying goodbye, the guy did one of those touches to the inside thigh of our guy and hardly said a word to the girl who liked him. He was gay and not interested in her.

Day #2

I was woken up at 8am because everyone else in my group was going sand boarding and I couldn’t get back to sleep afterwards for some reason despite my repeated attempts. I woke up feeling like real **** since the previous night ...

Funky Town

Today is a travel day and there is a bright blue sky again. This region only receives 50 mm. (2 in.) of rain per year. As we're rolling down the road, we’re listening to Johnny Clegg, an African singer, which is playing on the truck’s CD player.

Our first stop is at a place called Solitaire. The only thing there is a bakery and general store. We are told it makes the best apple crumble and it doesn’t disappoint. Lots of ...

Heini's Home

... her mouth and laughed a little and the two men actually blushed and giggled like children. When we passed a barbershop Andy decided to get his bead trimmed and which was pretty funny. Next we went to a “witch doctor” whose little wood shack was much bigger then it looked from the outside. When we stepped into the dark interior it took a moment to adjust our eyes and when we did it was with surprise. There were skinned animals and strange ...

Great African Trek Week 1

... a day off! Most people pull their weight though and things have been running pretty smoothly so far.

We arrived at our first overnight stop around 5pm. Hes gave us a quick demonstration on how to set up our tents and we got them up in no time at all. While Rachel and the other cooks helpers were sorting out dinner most of us went to the bar for a bit of a bonding session. Rachel joined us later and we got talking to another Irish girl who also happens to be from ...

Half-Way Over

... it is so easy to say black people are lazy or if they would just go to school they could get a good job or that anyone who doesn't have a good life can only blame themselves. I can not believe that I even felt that way. That is most certainly not the case. In countries like the U.S. it is so easy to be a blind racist. We all are. And it's so sad. I don't know what to do or say to make people who are advantaged realize that they ...

Day Eight - Swakopmund

Our pickup for the dolphin ride is at 9:15 today so we don't get much of a lie in this morning. Yesterday we stopped at a supermarket to buy some breakfast knowing that we had to fend for ourselves today. My breakfast consists of half a packet of chocolcate chip cookies and an apple (nice and nutritious!). Yum!

We get picked up along with a family of four and we're driven to Walvis Bay where we board the boat. Almost as soon as we get on, a seal jumps up on ...

Day 173 - Namibia, Swakopmund - Quad Biking

... the top but something happened resulting in her being thrown and having the bike roll over her. Ouch not nice. She had already been taken away when we arrived with suspected shoulder damage. Nothing broken but was taken to hospital for x-rays just to be on the safe side.

Just after that had happened Jamie's bike cut out. They couldn't get it started so had to radio base to bring out a spare rendering the group motionless for the best part of 15 ...

The Happy Camper- literally

... The first day day was pretty quiet. We had a relatively short drive to the winelands and actually camped overlooking a vineyard. Pretty cool actually. We had a wine tasting and got to know eachother a little better.

The night sky was beautiful as expected and I learned how to pitch a tent in 5 minutes flat (yes that's right Angie and Nat, 5 minutes!!) with my bunkmate Nikki. She is the girl I met and chatted with at the hostel but more about her later.

The ...

Christmas and New Years in Namibia

Namibia is a land of sand and sea, with a coastline stretching almost 1500 miles from the northern border of South Africa to the southern side of Angola. It is starkly beautiful with the biggests and dunes in the world. We have half a house there with Mukesh so if you want to go somewhere different, just ask and we can accomodate you!
