Slowly does it....

The Jewel of Southeast Asia

If we were to live in SEA, Luang Prabang would likely be the place. The charming UNESCO World Heritage Site holds firmly to its French colonial influence while not loosing sight of its Laos heritage. The setting is idyllically situated in the mountains on a peninsula created by the Mekong River. We found a room in an old french colonial just off the main street. Our days were spent exploring the streets, Wats and Royal Palace, and our nights roaming the night market where the hill tribes sell...

The Road to the End...

... girls around the ages of four or five cheerfully played all afternoon without a single toy. They began by playing a game where they picked up a bundle of sticks and then threw them in the air and tried to catch as many as possible with one hand. Next, they moved on to chasing each other around the bamboo pole that held up the wooden awning over the front door. Soon their brother joined in and Claire and I just sat back and watched as these children entertained themselves without a ...

Slow Boat to nowhere.

... be about 3 hours until he realised what had happened!

We reached Luang Prabeng at about 5pm and managed to find a Guest House big enough to fit all 12 of us in. After a quick shower it was time to head out and see what Luang Prabeng had to offer. We found a decent bar for food and drinks and found out that all the bars closed at 11pm with the exception of one - the bowling alley. So come 10pm we all headed that way. We managed to get an alley between us and somehow my winning ...

Invited to a wedding

... our new-found travelling friends, Jon and Paula, who had come on the train from Kent via Russia, Mongolia and China. Because of the easygoing atmosphere at Coldriver Guesthouse we were invited to eat meals with the family every time they set eyes on us. We were also invited to a wedding. The marriage was something to do with the extended family next door and around three hundred guests had been invited. When I asked Sisamui, who looks something like a Lao sumo wrestler and was rarely ...
