We travelled an hour and a half on a narrow gauge train from Madurai to arrive in Theni, a bustling southern city, rich with tradition and habits. We stayed at Sankar Lodge which is a simple Indian hotel just around the corner from the bustling bus station. Theni is not a place that sees many foreigners and we found our 11 days there somewhat tiring when we were out and about. We are constantly stared at and at times are bombarded with children running up to shake our hands, say "hello" or as...

What bothers me most about it all is that the underlying product being sold - basic CBT strategies for time management and fighting depression - are valid, but the book is marketing it as eternal youth. Again, considering the presumed intellectual sophistication and maturity of the upper-middle class readership, the idea of being pandered to like children is as insulting as the packaging is odious.

Dear Beatriz:
To like somebody without loosing yourself control is such a mission impossible. To like, to appreciate, to enjoy the beauty of one another is such a passionate task in nature that being devoid of flare of emotion is just simply not a very logical thing in nature.
I have been trying very ***********trol my unbridled passion or compassion for any other person ...

Shoulderstandd (Sarvangasana) Plough (Halasana) Fish (Matsyasana) Forward bend (Paschimothanasana) Cobra (Bhujangasana) Locust (Shalabhasana) Bow (Dhanurasana) Spinal twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana) Crow pose (Kakasana) or Peacock pose (Mayurasana) Standing forward bend (Pada Hasthasana) Triangle (Trikonasana) Then at the end of the sessions we would always do a deeper, blissful final relaxation during which we often fell asleep. We loved the yoga classes and ...
Trivandrum, Kerala, India inoursuitcase... But Ed went into a snit as he doesn't want me to buy a bunch of junk I can't pack with me. Anyway, business is bad this year as people are cancelling their vacations. It may improve next year, but next year's business doesn't pay today's bills. So things are less rosy at the jewelry shop. The ring was a tiny bit too small. I'd asked him to make it between 2 sizes, and he said he would but made it like the small one. For ...
Varkala, Kerala, India voyager-sue... cropped hair-cuts laden with jewelry, colourful silk clothing and lashings of black kohl for some reason, even though none of the adult women wear it. Varkala is a well developed beach town with a strip of cafes, shops and guesthouses on a palm-tree lined cliff overlooking the beach. It gets a bit claustrophobic after a while because there is literally nothing else here, except the strip and each day involves a constant chorus of 'come look my shop' 'you come for dinner ...
Varkala, Kerala, India aoifenim... had a nice buffet. [Background info: That was our first day off from the Ashram, and a boisterous Czech girl named Bibianna and I got a cab into town to use the Internet. We parted ways once we arrived b/c she was determined to find "Western" food. Well, Bibi ended up having a day that was like out of a Bollywood movie, which (among other things)involved her on the back of a store owner's motorcycle, driving through town w/ a pizza box in her hand in which she promised to ...
Varkala, Kerala, India marlatrips... bad. Not something i think well do again for a while though, not worth it the next day! The weather has been ace and in true Brit style i burnt on the first day and still suffering 3 days later. Never underestimate the indian sun. ouch. Off to Appelley today, backwaters of Kerela on a 24 hours house boat ride. Good time to come at the moment because prices are (apparently) half price and the weather is still good most of the time, so treating ...
Varkala, India pruepayne... the latest business bibles, beautiful art deco buildings - especially the fantastic train station - a very palpable absence of cows, and a very popular, commercial tourist centre. the headbobble proved to be an effective bargaining tool when we were captured by security guards at 2 am after sneaking into the pool at the taj, the most renowned hotel in the city, and unsuccessfully extorted for a few hundred rupees. we practiced our headbobble as we ...
Varkala, India bowz... constant onslaught of demanding beggars, and insistent sellers around the temple complex, and the very real poverty in the surrounding villages, is unsettling for the heart, and challenged both Stacy and I to tears at times. In Bodh Gaya, we were reminded of the complex relationship of tourism with begging. Because children can make the family decent money by begging each day, they will often forego school and a normal child's life. All extremes of disability are seen on the streets of ...
