... has always seemed a better option to me. The views are stunning, although the summit and the mini Rinjani volcano look just like the slag heaps in Merthyr when I was kid and before they were grassed over - so not pretty in themselves.
The kindest thing that happened to us was the cloud descending on Day 1. It kept us cool (relatively, it was still hot as hell) and meant we couldn't see how far away the summit was.
