... both of us have always liked elephants –
maybe it's the movie Dumbo that got us hooked? Laos has many wild
elephants and the government and other environmental organizations
are involved in saving the elephants from poachers and irresponsible
development. We both took turns being the Mahout (elephant driver)
and it was amazing to feel the elephant's ears against our legs when
it flapped some fly away; or when it drank water ...
Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep carlaandmike... obscured by the undergrowth.

The next day, the alarm went off at 5.45, and we eventually dragged ourselves out of bed, hopped on our bikes (though ‘hopped’ probably sounds a bit more lively than it felt!) and cycled into town to witness the alms collection by the monks of Luang Prabang. Every day at this early hour, the streets are lined with townspeople who settle themselves down on the pavement ...
Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep rachelandmike... totally spicy. Curries are another popular specialty-- delicious clay pot of simmering meats and vegetables in coconut milk and spices. The french food is great as well-standard classics like steak fritte, roast chicken, etc.. but the highlight of French influence in Lao food is the bread. Baguettes are ubiquitous from breakfast to lunch to dinner, and they have truly perfected the art of the baguette in Lao: they are absolutely phenomenal. The best of all of these foods ...
Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep afruin... so much fun!

The night markets here are spectacular, we have decided to do all our Christmas shopping here and send them home slow mail in a box, so we don't have to carry them with us.
There are rows and rows of stalls selling all sorts of beautiful things by candle light, and then as you come out, you can get a fruit smoothie/shake for 50p...so far dragon fruit and banana is our favorite, and although we shouldn't drink to many cuz they use their own ice in them ...

Somewhere In The Wild, Louangphrabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep blummo... night.
Today I went to the waterfall just outside of town. It was unreal. Waterfall after waterfall, and pools galore. We waded around, jump off cliffs, and used the rope swing for a few hours before heading back to town. It was a lot of fun. Now, I'm just relaxing for a bit before we all get ready and head to the bowling alley again. Tommorow I will be heading to Vang Vieng for the infamous tubing down the Mekong River.

Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep perez_r
I spent the next few days making big plans. Where to go? When to go? Should I stay in LP and work? It just took getting out a map of SE Asia and figuring out when I would like to be what country. I have two time restrictions, one, I'm meeting two friends from Australia, that I met in Mexico, in Thailand in October, two, I'd like to be in Australia to spend Christmas time with Rhian. So a rough sketch of my journey looks like this: Here in LP until around Aug 12th ...
Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep tex25... rate. ha ha) for some of the loss for their abandoned speedboat trip!

So being that there was now 6 of us (one addition of a constantly unamused German girl who we also met on the boat), we went in search of rooms. Basically to let you know, Luang Prabang is a world heritage city and very trendy and cultural (unexpected for laos). Its got plenty of boutique style shops and trendy restaurants, all of which taking a French style image ...
Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep danhobson... defuse a bomb. He was asking for money because he was unable to work. None of the bus passengers would talk to him and he was shood away or just ignored. A few people tossed money at the photogenic girls before we left.

When we got back on the bus the German girl was telling everyone that the ball passing game the girls were playing was "The most boring game in the world". I was glad when we eventually rolled into Luang Prabang in the late afternoon and got off that dreadful bus.
