Eilen puksuteltiin bussilla Vang Viengista Vientianeen. Bussin ollessa kaupungilla naimme tutun naaman.
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep 11kaks On our way into Pakse our minivan was pulled over by a police stop. Well I call it a police stop. One guy in the road, hat, uniform [inc Desert Eagle], boots etc, and about four others; shoes off, playing cards, drinking and smoking by the side of the road. Standard South East Asian police activity. Our driver got out, had a chat (seemed informal) and then paid what we assumed to be a bribe, before leaving with a smile on his face. Strange.
Got into Pakse, and the threesome of me, Ari and ...
Bonjour,
Up early this morning and had breakfast on the guest house's terrace overlooking the Mekong which was lovely. Bought a ticket for the next leg of the journey and prepared for numb bums for the rest of the day (we missed out on the cushions again). Most of the same people were on our boat today and so the ice was broken a bit. Got chatting to a lovely Scottish couple who it turned out were not only going to the same thing we were about to do but had also done pretty much exactly the same route...
Huay Xai, Lao Peoples Dem Rep emanddaveFriday the 31st of August and it was time to leave Chiang Rai and in fact time to leave Thailand. I got the Local bus to Chiang Kong at 10am, which is in the far north of Thailand. Most of the road was good, just a small bad part near Chiang Kong. While on the bus I seen a young woman breast feeding her child, (a first in real life). The bus journey was only 2 hours, when I got to Chiang Kong I had to get a tuk-tuk to the Thai border. The customs man stamped my passport and asked me for 5 bah...

After the silk farm our guide took us to see an old Russian tank that has been abondoned in a field near a village. Most of it's parts have been taken by locals for scrap metal. The Russian's sent tanks like this one to the Lao Communists to aid them during the Vietnam war.
We then stopped at a village where they have used old artillery shells to build some of their houses and huts. This is something that we've seen in several places around Phonsavan. There was a r...
Thakhek is a small town of no particular interest, but there are a lot of limestone caves surrounding it. We probably should have learnt from the Vang Vieng experience, but we thought we could get out and see these natural features. Unfortunately the main cave we had planned to visit (a 7km long cave that you could sail through on a boat) was completely flooded, so it was not possible. The town itself was nice, but without the caves, it lacked anything to sustain our interest. We did managed ...
Pakse, Champasak, Lao Peoples Dem Rep nick.maynardGo to the Summary Page ___________________________ In Pakse I shared a room with Ursa and Darja. After arriving we took time to rest, plan, go on the internet etc... I needed time to decide what I would do in Laos, and how much time that would leave me for Burma... This indecisional thinking turned out to last for days, but in the end this travelogue would tell the true story. We stayed at Sabaidy 2 Guesthouse, which I recommend, as the Lao-english-french speaking host is really helpful and f...

Over lunch, our guide Pon was telling us stories about how he kept mistaking ladyboys for women! And how he'd accepted ********s from ladyboys but nothing else... it was very funny and obviously we took the mickey out of him for the duration of the trek!
Stayed at another village that night - a Lamet tribal village - these guys were originally from China so look more Chinese and just speak in their own dialect - while we waited for dinner we bathed ...
