Alice on ancient rubble

Typically the morning we left Ton Sai, after 2 hours sleep and with just enough Baht scrapped together for the boat to Au Nang, the clouds parted, the sky turned luminous blue and the sun beat down on our Mojito beaten bodies. But it was still lovely to see and it did follow us to Cambodia. We spent one night at a hostel in kuala Lumpar, which was spent only sleeping to catch up on the night before but we did get to eat some 'street food' (gotta love that term), Tom Sum with seafood and it wa...

I Left Cambodia and Lived to Tell this Story

Of all the countries I have visited on this trip, Cambodia has been the craziest so far. I don't say this sarcastically in any way. It is literally crazy. Thailand has nothing on this place. Nothing.

Cambodia left a mark on me which will stay with me for a really long, long time and has affected me probably more than I am even aware of at the given moment. I think every Westerner should spend a few days in this place for a million reasons and as I write about my own experience and obs...

Spose we better check out these temples then.....

So we got one of the "Scam Buses" from Bangkok to Siam Reap. Just before the border you are dropped off at their company run restaurant where you are told to buy a Cambodian visa from them for 45 USD (as opposed to 20 USD at the border) otherwise it will take too long at the border for you to do it yourself and they will not wait - or so they say. A guy from the company who boarded the bus in Bangkok even gave us an Oscar worthy speech about how 'he is good man, in the Cambodia they are not g...

Templed Out in Cambodia

Top 5 Discoveries in (Siem Reap) Cambodia 5. Cambodians are pleasant, mild-mannered people. They have a singsong accent and are surprisingly nice even when you bargain unreasonably. (They also commonly have single-syllable names.) 4. Siem Reap is like a big park. Riding an open tuktuk all day is refreshing. No pollution, baby! 3. Food is spicy but enjoyable. The place may not be well-maintained (read: not clean), but the dishes are usually well-presented. 2. There's a faster rate of degradati...

Khmer Karaoke

Day Seven: Phnom Penh to Siem Reap The cheapest way to get from Cambodia's capital city, Phnom Penh, is by motorbus. We decided to take the Mekong Express, not because they had the sweetest name, but because they were supposed to be remotely reliable and nice (air conditioning and a TV). In actuality, the bus had tassled curtains, seat cushions with a cartoon woman in a bikini, and a TV that played Cambodian karaoke. In addition, we were served a sketchy breakfast of croissants with mystery m...

Vietnamista Kambodzaan

Siam Reap

Nyt vietetään neljättä päivää Siam Reapissa. Ensimmäinen päivä meni kaupungilla kävellessä ja paikkaan tutustuessa. Illalla syötiin omassa guest housessa ja pelattiin bilistä. Tää meidän guest house on ihan hotellin tasoinen.

Hello ladeeee! Or, Conversations in Cambodia

For $15, I had a tuk-tuk driver for the day who took me around the sites of Angkor Wat. We planned a 2-day itinerary, and I set off with my goofy fisherman's hat, a big waterbottle, my camera, a few U.S. dollars, and the riel I changed when I arrived yesterday. There is only one thing I'm looking to buy here, and that's a Thailand-only guidebook so I can ditch the outdated book I have. I arrive first at Angkor Wat, and am immediately surrounded by vendors. "Hello ladeeeee! You want hat? Water...

Angkor Temples

Arrived in Cambodia after an hours flight to a very swanky new airport. Hadn't been expecting that. Wasn't expecting all of the plush hotels on the main drag into town either. Taxi driver asking me where I was going and where I came from. Gave my usual spiel about having a friend who lives here and teaches english, who conveniently has an apartment that I'm staying at for free and I'm meeting him at a cafe/restaurant. Always works in that ...
