    ... struck a chord' with me and we discussed our views on "getting to grips" with the South African culture. The sounds of the bush were simpler, more direct "songs" from the wildlife. The city air though does not have a song or a rhythm - Cape Town and Africa generally can be noisy, dusty but quite vibrant - its "soul" is the spoken word, shouts of greeting, calls of recognition and the constant buzz of energetic, competitive life.

    ... After spending almost a month hiking in June/July, I thought this hike would be no big deal but I was wrong. We crossed knee deep ice-cold water -- during which some fellow travelers were piggie-backed accross -- and had to be hoisted up rocks that were twice our size.     ... a shanty town or favela. Yet as you wait a lamborghini can pass you by and drive into a house 15 yards away. It is bizarre and must naturally breed a helluva lot of contempt in certain quarters. That is why there is electric wire fencing around the houses - one of the things I will remember will be the noise of the wire earthing against branches everywhere blown down by strong winds. Creepy.
