F-F-F-FREEZING FILM FEST FUN!

Confirming my ever-strong belief in fate and allworking out eventually, we ended up in Morocco right on time for the 2009 Marrakech Film Festival! As film fanatics, we hot-well, actually cold-footed it-from freezing cold Casa to Marrakech making it just in time for films galore...

Getting back to the Western world is weird after adventures in African countries like Mali and Senegal as it seems so different yet only a drive-or even briefer flight ...

... through. This is not your average tour. An overlanding tour is you plus twenty or more of your new closest friends living off an overlanding truck, a huge truck with a passenger compartment with flaps as windows and well worn seats all facing inward. Cooking gear and truck stuff goes in the undercarriage compartments while our stuff, tents and food go in compartments found under the seats and floors of the cab. Essentially you are hauled from place to ...

Freckled Woman With Henna

Marrakech is most definitely my favorite city thus far. I hate to say it is also one of the most touristy places we have visited thus far. I wonder if maybe I just found it comforting to see people in shorts and tank tops again. We stayed in a camp site full of the usual wild cats but with a twist, we had about a dozen Peacocks. Simply stunning. Happy were we to find the campsite equipped with hot water and western toilets, but I do believe that the Spanish may have had their ...

... not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."

God provided Abraham with a ram to sacrifice in place of his son. This is one of those stories that sometimes didn't affect me because I already knew the end. Abraham wins, Isaac lives to carry out the will of the Lord. But that moment of faith, Abraham ready to kill his beloved, struck me hard when I watched that sheep die. That is what sacrifice is; it is offering up your most beloved because of faith in a God much bigger than me or ...

... them. Oh, well.

There are countless souks or small shopping area throughout central Marrakesh. They stretch for miles in every direction and sell anything and everything. I walk through the souks and within about 45 minutes I am directionally challenged. The souks are a maze. I know which general direction the hotel is but it is difficult to find the right laneway to take me back. The amount of tourists are now becoming less and less. The tourist shops are ...

... uncommon to see recent guests such as Demi Moore. I could tell it was high class - we had to walk through a metal detector to get in. Hey, at least it was safe! After that we headed to Jad Mahal, a local night club and enjoyed the music for a little bit. It was more of a lounge setting - we actually walked in the bar with them singing Amy Whinehouse's "Rehab"...accompanied by traditional Moroccan dancers! Finally, he took us home...it was a long day!

Medina Walls

... A few dirhams are nothing for these memories. Their friendly smiles will meet you in conversation and the next thing you know you are laughing over kebabs and tajines. The cooks in the background are entertainment alone as they dance crazily behind mounds of food. Big smiles and laughs are worth the risk of food poisoning here. The chances of seeing any of these people again are slim to none. Nonetheless, you walk out of the walls into the busy streets ...
