Porto, asleep by the river.

... bad. Port is a fortified wine that is mixed with Brandy to halt the fermentation, so in many of the less expensive wines the balance is poorly done and it tastes and smells like off Brandy. However, if you can splurge on a glass of vintage or lbv port, you'll be pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the nicer ones quite a bit, but as it's very sweet it's something I could only enjoy a bit at a time.

After a few days in Porto I was fortunate enough to meet someone on ...

Porto is like Lisbon, only sweeter and fortified!

... are. The distilleries were surprisingly accessible, with all of them offering tours of the caves and tastings, for a fee of course. We were only able to visit a couple (Porto seems to close for 2 hours during lunch) before catching our evening flight out, but we are glad to have tried some new and very interesting kinds of port. Thank you Portugal, we will be back to see more.

Port-no

... the better part of an hour looking for any restaurant that was opened. Our meals were : a tuna salad (a can of tuna, unrippened tomatoes and lettuce) and pork (a peice of pork, rice and french fries.) Long story short we were more then enthusiastic to get on the road in the morning to leave Porto behind

Porto

... to A Guardia, the city in Spain right across the river from Portugal. it is well known for the old civilization up in the mountain. we went up in the mountain to take pictures and look around. there was so much fog, it was hard to see at some points. the city was really cool. i prefer it over Vigo. After spending a little time there we decided to head back via the ferry to Portugal. the ferry is only an 8 min ride. beforehand we stopped at the grocery store and bought ...

The gritty side of Porto

... it you need to climb down steep stairs or laneways. We started our way downwards and straight away we found ourselves in a 'gritty' area, with smelly laneways, washing flapping and people who looked pretty down-on-their-luck ambling about. We kept heading downwards, following our noses but taking the downward path when we needed to choose a new direction. After about 10 minutes of descending we reached the river Douro. The first thing we did was to take a ...

Easter in Porto.

... list. We used Porto's excellent Metro system to reach the hotel in no time (well, it took us about 45 minutes), and then we went off exploring for the next few days. Most of the time we spent wandering around the narrow and somewhat steep streets in Porto's historical center (another UNESCO World Heritage Site) as well as down by River Douro with all its restaurants and photogenic bridges. We found a beautiful city with lots of ...

... oretta.
