After another high speed train ride, we found ourselves in Barcelona around 5:00. We figured out the metro system and landed at our stop shortly after. It was getting dark and was pouring down rain (this was a theme during our travel days. Wet luggage = not good!). We had directions to our hostel, but when we started looking around, none of the streets said what we wanted. So, we went and asked some directions. A nice little lady in one of the shops pointed the way. After walking a while, we ...
Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Canary Islands beccaboyer Covered a lot of ground today in Barcelona. Bought tickets to the tour bus, which goes around the city providing commentary in various languages. We rode 2 routes of the bus, 2 hours each. Hopped off a bus and toured Gaudi's masterpiece Casa Milŕ a.k.a. La Pedrera, an amazingly organic-looking house.
We had lunch at La Ramblas, the main and most famous (and most pickpocket-riddled) pedestrian street of Barcelona. The service here is uniformly horrible as far as we've seen. The waiters make...
This was our first day in Barcelona. In the morning we stepped into a classic Catalan cafe which is at close proximity to our hotel and had some delicious tortillas. Most cafes here have a bar-style sitting in front of the counter, that is what we also did. This was enjoyable as you can order more easily pointing out the food and communicate with the service guys. The guy at the cafe was very energetic, talkative and helpful but didn't know a word of English. But somehow we managed to communi...

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Canary Islands ramsey_a... crunches every now and then. Hmmm okay so that night blew, we went to a really touristy spot where we watched a bunch of wasted "gringos" make fools of themselves while we stayed classy. The next day we got up early and went to Park Guell!! My fav part of the trip. It was soo beautiful and the weather was amazing and it has great views of the entire city. We had to take the metro there then walk up the longest hill of my life. It was fine though b/c we def needed ...

Barcelona, Spain jfquebec... say "Muchas Gracias", those in Northern Spain say "Muchas, GraTHias." At first I just thought I was speaking to people of a more liberal persuassion, but as this speech impediment was heard from everyone, I had to ask about it. So it seems that in "proper" Spanish, the "C" (that we would pronounce as an S) and "Z" are supposed to be pronounced "Th". Those Southern Spaniards, and South Americans just simply say it wrong. I have another theory... A while back ...
Barcelona, Spain bradman... didn't really have anywhere else to be at that time so it didn't matter. We got there in the afternoon, and tried to get some sleep on the grass outside. We'd been up since five thirty to catch our early train, and we certainly deserved a siesta. Our bags were in lockers, and we just had our small day bags with us. When night came, we started to realise our error. You see, we had left our sleeping bags, clothes, washing bags, and our emergency bottle of Sambuca in the ...
Barcelona, Spain foolsgold... and instructed him to give the locker a little tap. Usually that will reset things but as he was extremely tired and stressed, the tap ended up denting the locker! He seemed like he needed a chill out day so I asked him if he would like to come with us and he said ´Why not?´ So off the three of us went to visit what I now dub the Happy Park. The sun was hot and intense but every now and then a cloud comes along bringing ...
