The cave, The last(?) ruin, The cosy city

... de los Caballeros was the capital but was abandoned after have been flooded by a lagoon! The Spanish really knew where to establish a capital.
For me active volcanoes have just been fun. I climbed Vulcan de Pacaya, a climb that towards the top looked like Mordor - gloomy and deserted. The terrain was pretty harsh consisting of spiky lava rocks. But no doubt worth it when we got to the lava and I could poke in it with a stick and barbecue a marshmallow over it. It was dark ...

Hola chicos!
At some recent requests we thought it would be a good idea to give everyone a better view of our life here. Help you all form a better picture to how it is we live and who we interact with on a daily basis. I thought the best place to start would be with our casa and guatemalteca familia.

We live on the north side of Antigua cerca the parque San Sebastian. Despite coming in almost an hour late, I got my head filled with grammar and vocabulary already on the very first day. Luckily, some of it was already familiar due to the few lessons I've had in Copenhagen before leaving. I am taking as much as 5 hours 5 days ...

Volcanoes, marshmallows and manwhores.

... I only wish I had a t-shirt with Yasser Arafat's face on it just to **** 'em off!
The next day we packed our *************ed down the street to The Gran Kahuna. This was more like it, cheaper diggs and free internet. The only thing that started to get to us was the endless Bob Marley playlist, if I ever hear 'One Love' one more time, I reckon I'll keel over!

We hung out in Bocas for a week or so, sampled the local rum and made a few new friends (and a ...

Settling in Antigua

... would be waiting for me to give me a little tour of the city. So much for crashing on my newly acquired bed!! The hostel is small and nice. Has only 7 rooms of which only 1 is a single room. And only 3 of the rooms have windows - all the other room including mine has no windows at all. Adding to that that my room probably is the size of a small walk-in closet then there is not much space. But on the other hand, who needs that!

I ...

Antigua - Volcano time!

... lava flows, which looked like some sort of alien landscape. We ran down a part of the slope that was covered in ash, and everyones shoes filled up. It was pretty much like running in power snow or sand dunes. We reached the old lava flows which were hard and had formed weird looking patterns, you could also feel the heat in the rocks, and coming up from vents in the ground. We climbed over some of the old lava flows to finally reach ...

Rest and Repairing In Guatemala City

... a great lunch of fresh fish/ We drove down route 9 through the Rio Hondo Valley and then up up and up into the hills surrounding Guatemala City. Once we entered this big city of about 1 million - we stopped and opened up a map to try to figure out how to get to our hotel. We stopped a police truck (police cruise around in pickup trucks in Guatemala) and they said they were just not comfortable with us being in that neighborhood looking lost with a map ...

Guatemala: West

... very big gun and a very big dog outside our hotel front door. I think. Guatemala city is a very very poor cousin of Mexico City, it has nothing of worth to look at, the main square that tries to imitate Mexico City's Zocalo has a 60s block in it....? Zone 10 is comfortable if a little characterless with business hotels, malls and Maccy Ds. To be honest, Guatemala in general is a bit of a poor relation of Mexico. It wins on landscape but lacks a little in character.
