Today I went to Bergamo, about 50km E of Milan which is actually two towns in one; the low (and new) town (still old to us) and the high medieval town behind Venetian walls on the alpine hilltop. From the train you walk through the new town and can get a funicular up the very steep part, it's more than a 45 degree angle and the little cable car only takes 16-20 people (far better than climbing that many steps though).
