Off to Umbria

... are teeming with families, young people and older folks just walking enjoying the cool weather, hot coffee and all sorts of chocolate products. I even caught a wedding happening on Sunday. We have another two days here and will return to Rome on Wednesday afternoon….just in time for dinner and a full day of touring before heading back hone on Friday morning.

Best to all back home,

On To Umbria, And The Very Spiritual Assisi

... out with a beautiful mixed salad and a plate of steamed, garlicky spinach (melt-in-your-mouth) – plus strangozzi (thick spaghetti) with mushrooms in a truffle sauce (wonderful). Murray started with a huge charcuterie board of mixed cured meats (salami, prosciutto, etc. – all the stuff we pregnant women cannot eat, boo-hoo). For mains, Murray had wild boar stew (tender and flavorful) while I enjoyed a Brusciola pizza (mozzarella, mushrooms, and sausage, with an ...

Drive through Le Crete

From Chianti went south to the Le Crete region. The drive provided us with more quintessential Tuscan scenery. We stayed overnight in Asciano as we could not make it to Montalcino before dark. We had vowed not to drive in the dark as the small windy roads and excessively erratic Italian drivers are not good for our nerves!

Back to Italy

Back to the land of pay toilets. Don.t know why that bothers me so much but it does. It just doesn.t seem right. Anyway, we are now in Assisi. We got off the boat and it was raining, and then we had to take a detour to Assisi. the road was very narrow and hilly, It was a little tense for awhile. Saw St Francis ...

Ciao Italia

Well, our last day in Arezzo.
My haircut turned out OK I think.
Turns out that the head (excuse the pun) hairdresser had lived in Australia for a few years, and although she couldn't remember much english, I emerged unscathed sans mohawk!

We spent the last day wandering the streets of Arezzo in the raiin and discovered new nooks and crannies, it's that sort of town ...

Cortona

... dellightful cafe for lunch: Margaharita Pizza, with a thin crispy base, belissimo! This cafe is well known as a meeting place for Hollywood stars.

Cortona has very narrow and steep streets, purrfect for pets.
Finally we arrived back at Arezzo and after booking a haircut for myself tomorrow (the hairdresser doesn't speak English so that will be exciting) I am sitting at the La Dolce Vita cafe writing this entry while Jane is off looking at the shops (gulp)

Cioccolato

... pizzeria where I had delicious lasagna. After lunch we browsed through the many stands. Sample after sample led to some major purchases. It was hard to pass up the various chocolate products when the smell just filled the air. There was everything from chocolate beer to chocolate “pills” to chocolate pasta!!

Heaven.

I’ll update you soon,

It never made me this happy before

... smelled funny, but it was one of the best days of my trip. Someone asked me directions and i knew right off the top of my skull where to go..... Firenze is forever imprinted in my brain from the Arno to Giovanni's shop (my photo guy, he was closed, but I went to say hi!) Except only now can I appreciate it, (Neal knows best) but I hated it when I actually lived there. It was good for me to see the true beauty of this city has with my older, more mature (ha!) perspective.

Florence - Escaping the clutches of Venice

... fled out the door. We take the tortuous paths of another grey and bleak day in Venice back to the train station to get seat reservation tickets for Florence and drop off our luggage. Hateful or not, we still have tickets to the Palazzo Ducale, so we can't leave Venice quite yet. After checking the bags, we went back out to the ticket line. Most lines we've waited in have had maybe twenty people ahead of us. Annoying, but not horrible. In Venice, there were nearer seventy ...
