Along the Nam Ou

Day 41 - Chatted to the guesthouse owner for a bit this morning who turned out to be really nice despite her first impressions, and her husband gave me two bananas from his garden for breakfast (which incidentally were the best bananas I have ever eaten!) I wanted to get a boat to Luang Prabang as I heard it was a beautiful journey and I was fed up with bus rides, but like most things in Laos, you need to get a larged group together for it to be affordable - we managed 7 falangs and it worked...

Hello Loas!!!

sprained my ankle this afternoon. Not so happy - the pain is starting to subside - I bought a wrap and have it elevated. Trying to remember all the parts for RICE. Seems I haven't done it very well. I rented a bike very early in the day in an attempt to mitigate the miles I was putting on searching for a Bank Machine that would accept the " Īnterac" logo. Seems nearly everyone uses a Visa or MasterCard Debit system, not Cirrus and Interact. Remember the hassle in Cuba girls????? We seem so fa...

Going North MIA For a Bit

Hey no worries. Laid back Laos is just what I needed after crazy busy Hanoi. I will be MIA for a few days because I am heading up the Mekong early tommorow morning in a small but very long skinny boat (think Banana Boat ride but not inflatible) I met a couple from California and we are going to head up about 8 or 9 hours on the boat upstream....I think we will rent it at the pier tomorrow.....wooden bench seats - two across fills the space.....not built for comfort or speed...hey what kind of...

A perfect birthday location:)

We are safely in Luang Prabang, we opted out of the slow boat option and flew instead. The inflight food (for the hour flight! - they arent that nice to you in England!) was really good:)

We were picked up from the airport by our guesthouse. The lady seemed lovely and really friendly. I chose well, the guesthouse is a wooden Laos house on stilts, we have a double room with fan and ensuite facilities - just perfect:) For $10 a night!!

We are really near the night market. We at...

The Road to the End...

... organizing our things, we took a walk around the city. Luang Prabang's stylish city center strikes a stark contrast to the backpacker slum of Vang Vieng. The main tourist avenue is dotted with classy shops selling wood carved souvenirs and silver jewelery rather than shops selling beach gear and the infamous "In the Tubing Vang Vieng" tank tops and t-shirts which can be seen on backpackers throughout Southeast Asia (of course Whitney and I bought one). At night, the main drag of the Luang ...

Tom and Amy are in love...with Laos!

... thought and I had to get off a couple of times and push (it just proves how unfit I am!) Tom ripped his toe open on some gravel and then it started raining. We made it to the waterfalls, but with all the rain there was no point of taking pictures. We grabbed a cheap pick up truck ride back to Luang Prabang only to find the French owner of the guest house was still not back. <br>The wife told us, with lots of apologizing, that he was still in vang vieng and would ...

The Jewel of South-East Asia

... town is held cushioned by the Mekong river on one side a smaller river on the other, that makes Luang Prabang so special. This town simply has spades of atmosphere. You could lose hours walking its colonial-period streets, stopping at its alluring shops or outdoor cafes (the best of which are on the mekong's riverside). It is hard to deny the town of its aesthetic beauty. Though tourism drives Luang Prabang (stunning villas/homestays opening ...

Tiger tales and spiritual tourists

... Frenchman who was sat on a rock smoking a spliff and looking all spiritual in a stylistic kind of way. More tourists began to arrive (some red-faced and groaning that in America/Australia/Canada there would have been a lift to the top) as the sun became a flaming orange ball and dipped towards the distant crags. Then a coachload of middle-aged French tourists turned up and there was almost a pitched battle as people fought to photograph the sunset from a pen-like area that was ...
