The kitchen is pretty big but there is no oven.

The 4 bed dorm is quite nice, the beds are comfy and clean and there's a TV with sky movies. It also has an ensuite which is okay but very small and not the cleanest. The shower only has one heat and it's very hot!

$32 a night each. Nice atmosphere & good bar. Friendly resident dog & big fat ginger cat too!

    Well run backpackers

This place seemed like a revolving door with all the Stray, Kiwi and Contiki buses coming in and out daily but the staff were on top of their game to keep everything cleaned and organized. Decent dorm rooms, and there are flashpacker rooms for those wanting some pampering. Good size kitchen with everything you need. And a fun onsite bar and restaurant...what more do you need?

Lush rainforest setting...ran out of loo paper

    Reviewed Sep 26, 2012
by (46 reviews) Leeds , United Kingdom Flag of United Kingdom

The campervan sites were spread out amongst the rain forest, so it was a lovely setting. The kitchen had just hobs, no ovens, 2 x toasters and about 3 or 4 sinks. There was a lounge area and a few dining tables. There was a meter on the wall, so not sure if you needed to feed it to meter to watch the TV.

The main toilet block for ladies had 2 showers and 3 toilets in it. There was a sign up saying additional toilet blocks could be opened if it was busy enough. The park was full the 2 nights we stayed there. We showered on an evening, in the mornings there were always queues for the 2 showers. On the second morning 2 of the ladies toilets were out of loo paper and had been since 6am. Maybe just an oversight.

The site itself is in the town and over the road from the hot pools.

    Recommended.

Today we went on a glacier hike up Franz Josef which was really good. We had to get a helicopter up to the glacier which was pretty cool. The glacier was really interesting, and challenging at times; I almost got stuck at one point much to everyone's amusement! Afterwards we all had lunch together and then we went to kiwi bird centre. In the …

Today we drove to Franz Josef. We stopped off on the way to see the Pancake Rocks but me and Rosie decided to go to the Pancake Rocks Cafe instead and have pancakes for breakfast; OMG the best pancakes were amazing. Excellent decision. Then we had a small incident where Lisa got locked inside the bus and had to screw the door off. Finally we got to …

RH: It was another long day's driving down the west of New Zealand. For a bit of background, New Zealand is about the same size as the UK but only has a population of 5 million people, nearly 4 million of whom live in Auckland, so there are vast tracts of land with no people and no towns. The west coast of the south island is the epitome of this, …

We leave Franz Josef behind this morning, it's like we are running from the tail end of the cyclone. It's a 5hrs of driving but we stop along the way. First stop is Lake Matheson, "the perfect picture postcard". Knights point is the second, part of a massive heritage site. We have been travelling now for 5 hours with a 1hr 30 break. Miles upon …

We haven't got to be at the heli-hike till 10:55. I'm awake at 7:30! Typical. By the time we arrive all the morning flights have been cancelled. Slight pain but we get a helicopter ride upto the glacier. You have to see the photos at this point because it's incredible, beyond words. When your going up the view makes you speechless.
