Franz Josef
We travelled from Mahinapua to Franz Josef the home of the glacier in the middle of the rainforest!!. We stayed in the rainforest retreat which was cool. It's really strange the glacier being where it is because of the temperate climate but the fact that it rains in Franz Josef more than 5 times it does in London is a contributing factor!! We went …
Skydiving and Glacier Hiking
We arrived in Franz Josef and the weather had gone from being really nice to torrential rain as there was a tropical storm nearby. This sucked as it meant we wouldn't be able to do the glacier hike the following day. It is one of the main things that I wanted to do in NZ so I decided to stay around an extra day so that I could do the hike, and the …
Lake Kaniere
We got up and got ready before making breakfast which caused Andrew quite a bit of stress as there wasn't a toaster. We ate and then drove to a historic lighthouse which looked in desperate need of a lick of paint. It looked so pitiful that I didn't even bother to get out of the campervan to view the thing! We found a free car park spot in the town …
Wet Wet Wet
We woke up to our alarm at 8am and headed straight for the shower block. We attempted to make poached eggs for breakfast but no gas ring would work so we had to make do with plain toast. We walked to meet Alex and Shane and then set off to spend the day outside in the rain! We first of all received a dog tag to wear around our neck before trading …
Pancakes, Logs and the Jungle
(Written by Mom) Thursday morning we backtracked a bit (with Parnelli Jones griping all the way) to an area known as the Pancake Rocks. These are formations that look like pancakes stacked up with blowholes at the edge of the ocean. The sea was churning that day which make for quite a site. We spent quite a bit of time in the state park and it was …

This place seemed like a revolving door with all the Stray, Kiwi and Contiki buses coming in and out daily but the staff were on top of their game to keep everything cleaned and organized. Decent dorm rooms, and there are flashpacker rooms for those wanting some pampering. Good size kitchen with everything you need. And a fun onsite bar and restaurant...what more do you need?

The campervan sites were spread out amongst the rain forest, so it was a lovely setting. The kitchen had just hobs, no ovens, 2 x toasters and about 3 or 4 sinks. There was a lounge area and a few dining tables. There was a meter on the wall, so not sure if you needed to feed it to meter to watch the TV.
The main toilet block for ladies had 2 showers and 3 toilets in it. There was a sign up saying additional toilet blocks could be opened if it was busy enough. The park was full the 2 nights we stayed there. We showered on an evening, in the mornings there were always queues for the 2 showers. On the second morning 2 of the ladies toilets were out of loo paper and had been since 6am. Maybe just an oversight.
The site itself is in the town and over the road from the hot pools.
Recommended.
