Dusty, quiet and full of life, Vientianne rocks!

Ahhh... Vientianne is a comfortable little city of great civility and absolutely no ambition. The city is blessed with one of my favorite bars anywhere, Kop Chai Deu, which is right next to the fountain. Outdoor seating, slow poured Beer Lao, and a crowd that mixes Hong Kong water project engineers, French tourists, Japanese photographers, Russian thugs, young ladies of indeterminate employment from all over the world, Lonely Planet travelers, and local Lao young people there to watch the sho...

Vientiane Day 188 (24th Nov)

... our journey. The gradual increase in heat and morning sunshine flooding through the bus windows increased my sense of excitement about Laos. Beautiful, lazy, green, untouched, all these adjectives spring to mind, Laos will be special.

Doing well now, no crashes or breakdowns, no starvation or diarhoea on the bus and we seem to be going in the right direction, if only they would turn off that god-awful Laos comedy show on the box. Steve, Dan ...

JoMa Rocks!

Today was also spent trying to recover and rest up for the bust journey ahead, see a pattern developing here?

We had the most awesome breakfast in the world at JoMa cafe, a small franchise with a branch in Luang Prabang as well, everything about it was perfect and I was glad to be finally getting my appetite back.

We had a quick walk around the back streets of Vientiane, the city seems to be ...

Laos - laid back and loving it

... but by this point, after trying out every position physically possible without insulting anyone, I’d find a couple of ways to get comfortable-ish. Again we arrived dry and on time. So overall my experience on the slow boat really wasn’t too bad and as expected the scenery made it worth it….won’t be doing it again in a hurry though, I’ve proved I can hack roughing it, right?

I spent 5 days in Luang Prabang but ...

... loss of limbs or eyesight). COPE has the dual mission of clearing unexploded ordinance from Laos and providing prosthetic limbs and therapy to people that have been injured by bombs and mines.

The next day was (as usual) hot and humid, so we decided to take advantage of a unique opportunity we had noticed as we pedaled around Vientiane the day before: a waterslide park! Now, most theme parks I’ve been to in the ...

Vientiane

... t resist eating somewhere named after my bestmate!!)
We wondered down to the river where they were putting offerings into the river. We bought a flower covered float with a candle and inscene to place in the river. A child was in the water to help push the floats out into the current and around us lots of locals were lighting lanterns to float into the sky like hot air ballons. We went back to the main street to join in with the fair fun and went on the bumper cars ...

Barely surviving dangerous tourist attractions....

... about everything we wanted to eat, i.e. orange juice and pizza, whilst lamenting the fact everything closed at 11. Next day this need was satisfied by a very very strange, yet brilliant breakfast of burger and chips (mmm early morning goodness!). It was then on to the 4 (but really 5) hour journey to Vientiane. Honestly, the bus drivers here love 3 things: Tooting the horn Bad terrible panpipe music played very loudly to the bus Turning off the ...

Hash House Harriers

... looking for but not finding stacks of shredded up paper, which replace the chalk spots towards the end of the hash. I got to the intersection that I thought would definitely have a pile of shredded paper at and it didn't. I was contemplating turning back and getting on the trail when Sir Cum Navigator's wife, Globe Twatter takes off for the finish line. I join her and we're dodging cars pulling out parking spots, motorcycles pulling out side streets, and people opening doors to get out of ...
