We took advantage of a break in a thunder shower to explore ruins of the Priamar fortress which is built on a hill near the harbor. In 1528 Savona was conquered by Genoa; the city was ransacked and the beautiful cathedral on the site was demolished. In its place the Genoese built an immense fortress. Parts of the fort have been transformed into a cultural arts and social center. We also walked to and visited the Sistine Chapel in Savona. With the ascent of Pope Sisto IV ...

We are at sea today writing this portion of the blog as we head for Casablanca, Morocco on the northwest coast of Africa. Savona was a surprisingly delightful Italian port city. Most passengers disembarked, having come to the end of their cruise to Istanbul. Many more passengers embarked so the ship is full for the voyage to Argentina. Missed direct train so caught local train with change at other Genoa stn. Bit difficult to work out the system but got there in the end. Train runs beside Med. Would be spectacular on a ...

... looking for turned out to be a very nice shop. I assumed the hotel must have been above it as this has been the case with two other places I had stayed at, but I couldn't find any stairs. Fortunately the shop assistant, who spoke English, explained that the "nero" part of the address meant that I had to look at the big black numbers on the building not the normal numbers ..... I ended up at the pointy end of Via XX Settembre near Piazza ...

... an independent, small group tour for this area and it would have been that much better, but, let me tell you, it is something to see. If Malta was a place that I could see me visiting again, then Cinque Terre was a place I could see me LIVING! This is Tuscany, baby! The heart of the Italian Riviera! After a very long day of "hurry up and wait", we made it back to the ship in time to pretty up for our final formal ...
