Day 25: Vientiane We took a bus from Vang Vieng to Vientiane (the Capital of Laos) in the morning. It took about 4 hours. When we arrived we had a walk around the place to see what there was. We had some lunch in a Scandinavian bakery and then walked along the riverside. As Laos is a former French colony, there is a lot of French style buildings, French signage and a lot of bakeries (which make great sandwiches and cakes!). We went to a Mexican restuarant for dinner, which was nice. It was fi...

Our overnight train arrived safely into Laos. We started off in the capital which is called Vientiane. We arrived on the outskirts of the city where we had to apply for our visas. We got a 30 day visa for 35 US dollars-it was the shortest visa you could get. We think they were chancers because Lonely Planet says its 30 USD and when Shar asked why it had changed they questioned her to whether she was here before. She said yes to see what they would stay but didn't have the nerve to keep up...
So one of the challenges of living in other countries is the visa issue. In Thailand, they make it especially difficult. Getting a 30 to 60 day visa is easy...you can get them at the airport. Their hope is that you'll come, stay a short while, blow all your money quickly because your time is limited, and then return back to your country of origin. Getting an extended visa, like a work visa, takes a little doing. My employer, Siam International School, took care of that, fortunately, but it st...
... smelled like creamsicles. Needless to say, I was thrilled.
After dropping our things off in the room, we walked about a block to go to a bicycle rental shop. We rented four bikes - pretty banged-up one-speeds with baskets - and headed off to tour the city. Sadly, the rental shop didn't rent helmets but I figured going helmetless for a day wouldn't kill me (I hoped). Riding around on bikes through Vientiane was an adventure because we were riding on ...
... Thailand, and drank some cool Beer Laos like the best of them.
Before heading further north, we decided that some more trekking was in order, in keeping with our desire to take advantage of Laos' great and largely untouched outdoors. We hooked up with a group by the name of Green Discovery, who seemed to have fairly decent ideas on keeping Laos as untouched as possible, and we (along with a couple of moody German sisters, a very moody French Canadian, a ...
... fountain - it wasn't bad, but better was the people watching.
On Wednesday we chartered a tuk-tuk out to Buddha Park (I want my dad to note that we bartered the tuk tuk man down 90,000 Kip from his original offer, we're getting better at it!). Buddha park is a totally bizarre collection of hindu and buddha statues in a small park 24km out of town. We really didn't know what to make of it, it was very odd, but a nice place for a picnic and we got ...

Before we arrived to the border crossing we stopped at a shop to get me a visa. I had my picture taken and had to fill out some paperwork. We drive 1 block up the road to the border crossing. I pay US $31 to cross and my Thai friends pay nothing and just show their Thai ID card. We crossed the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge on a bus to Laos. I don't know exactly if ...
