... are allowed up the narrow tower at a time should have told me that it's a small space up top. You pay once you're at the top of the narrow spiral staircase, and then you have to climb a ladder to get outside for the real view. At the top of the ladder you squeeze through a tiny door (it's a little awkward) and then BAM you're outside and way above the main market square! It's, like I said, a very small space where you just walk around the bell at the top and enjoy the views ...

... town. The man that gives the tour dresses as the night watchman and he's been doing it for the last 20 years. His humor is subtle, perfectly timed and hilarious as he describes the history of the town and the role of the night watchman. We were laughing out loud through the entire experience. It was about an hour of moving about town and stopping at different locations for stories about how Rothenburg barely survived as the pristine medieval city that we see today. At ...

We walked around the town and the markets. Ate Bratwurst rolls AGAIN for ...

The church was cool on this 80 degree day, but we eventually moved on. We popped in and out of several shops, then were delightfully trapped by octogenarian Annaliese Friese in her shop. She and Rick Steves are great friends, as attested to by the many photos of the two of them in the shop over the years, ...

So after a very late night last night it was up early today to head out for a 9 1/2 hour excursion. We were headed to the spa town of Karlovy Vary- about 20 kilometers from the German border. The town was originally settled by Germans but now is heavily populated by Russians. There are 16 mineral water springs in the town, in addition to the many hotels and "sanitariums" where one can bathe in the mineral spring water. Each tap has ...
