This went on for a while more before I thought, "enough is enough" and put us all out of our misery.
I learned a few things from this experience.
One is that the standard of VAs must vary widely. If Tim Ferriss, AJ Jacobs and lots of others can have such good experiences, while paying roughly the same amount, then there must be plenty of good VAs out there.
