What is great about backpacking with no fixed agenda or itinerary, is that you can make changes to your plans at any time, based on how you feel or based on things you read & hear. That was the case with our visit to Vienna & Kitzbuhel. We had not planned to visit Austria, but since we were so close to Vienna we decided to go there & since we were in Austria, ...

Today we were up and out by shortly after 8:00. Because it was threatening to rain by noon and because it was very clear this morning, we decided to head to Kaprun to Kitzsteinhorn and take the ski lift to the top. Our pass started us off with a very large gondola on ...

... octagonal room with the large fire place where Hitler was pictured meeting with his senior command. We wandered around the rooms and went outside, but it had really started raining. We waited it out and fortunately, the rain stopped after fifteen or so minutes and the fog lifted somewhat to reveal a beautiful view of the valley below and all the way to Salzburg.

By 4:30 we headed back down, boarded the special bus and wound our way back down the hill to the ...

... a small cobblestone spur road with lots of hairpin turns. Once at the top we had a 360* view. To commemorate the Peak I bought a pair of socks with Edelweiss flowers on them. We stopped at the Fuscher Torl, a memorial built in memory of the builders of the road. We had a good view of the tallest peak, the Grossglockner for which the Road is named.

After going through two tunnels through the mountain we arrived at Hochtor (High Gate) which ...
