Overall my impression of Pretoria was that there are some extremely nice areas that reminded me a lot of Belair \ Burnside with wide streets dotted with huge green trees, or big houses on hills overlooking the city. As far as how dangerous each place is, it all comes down to risk. You are probably more at risk in some areas in Pretoria and Johannesburg than you are in the Western Cape, or back home in Australia.
