Massage from Hell

After leaving the beauty of Pai, I am now en-route back to Chiang Mai (again!!) to look into a Thai massage course - after doing some research around Pai, it would seem the best schools are back in Chiang Mai. So about turn and back track for another visit... I travelled with Obi (Canada) and we settled into a tiny room at Panda Guest House and set up our travelling kitchen. Each morning we rose, cycled to the park and practiced yoga. Post-yoga we then cycled to the local market, sampled the ...

Chiang Mai

So we arrived in Chang Mai, Thailand's second city and the largest in the North, early doors. After our bus dropped us at a hotel for complimentary drinks at 5am we were treated to a sales pitch on behalf of the hotel owner. Sensing a hard sell, we slipped out and into a taxi to take us to our hotel which we had booked in Bangkok in a rare moment of organisation. I say taxi, it was a pick up truck with a roof and two benches which allow you to sit eyeball to eyeball with whoever else flags it...

Hangtime in chiang mai

Ahhhhhh the sun is shining as our bus pulls into chiang mai and a short while later were in a tuk tuk (crazy driver) on our way to our guesthouse. Our first impressions are that we like chiang mai although our choice of guesthouse leaves a lot to be desired. Like its namesake the panda guesthouse leaves us with dark rings around our eyes, due to the lack of sleep. our room seems to be bug central and luke very galliantly spent much time scouring for and ridding our room from giant icky cockro...

... a lighter with you to burn them off, it comes in handy.

While neither Greg nor I had to burn any leeches off, we definitively spent a lot of time scraping them off our shoes before they got to us and picking them off our socks. After yet another tiring day we finally arrived at a Karen tribal village. There is a small subgroup of the Karen's that are famous for wearing the brass rings around their neck but these villagers just wore heavy earings which stretched out their ...

... top where they spread out like green stained glass over your head). The other rainforest trees grow massively out of the ground like thunderclouds dotted with bright orange or red or yellow tropical flowers. There is no adjective for the color everywhere, it is not green, it is like green with the saturation turned all the way up on an acid trip, just so so so green.  There are a few contrasting pointed Thai red roofs sticking out from the trees of the farm as if the ...

One of Chiang Mai's secret places.....

... World War II. The Thai military used the highest peak of Doi Khuntan or Camp (Yaw) 4 as a look-out point for military operations. It was at this time the term "Yaw" or "Yutasatan", which translates into "strategic camp", was introduced. A visit to Camp 4 (the peak) provides a beautiful view of the valleys and surrounding mountains of Lamphun and Lampang. In addition to hiking the trail ...

... money on if I am not going to like it. Now is the perfect opportunity. I found papaya salad, many kinds of seafood salads, fried meat and seafood, and many kinds of fruit (I tried and liked them all). Bill told me that he saw some of the Chinese puffs that I like. The colour on the top indicates what type it is, but I have no idea and there is no one to ask, so I took one of each. One was purple on the outside, I had not seen that before, it was sweet. The one that ...
