Nice People, Lots of Character

Reviewed Dec 18, 2010

The meandering building and its relatively small rooms have a lot of character, with interesting Asian art scattered in unexpected places. (But try to get a room with a window, which some lack.) The large plant-filled patio area is nice, but wear bug repellent. Lots of funny cats and a nice terrier. The guy who runs it is a good guy. We were told by other guests that the activities he booked for them were very competitively priced.

The Journey

Following on from Terry's entry. Crazy day of packing on Friday, during which I managed to lose Terry's camera charger, miss an email about our transport to the airport and forgot to pack those things I was sure I had put in. Fortunately I did remember the important things like vegemite, Cadbury chocolates, Wagon Wheels etc for Tanya. I agree with Terry - we made the mistake of eating first off. The trip home is at the same time so ...

... chain twice in the same day. The first time she ended up in the boss' front yard and the second time she went trekking into the mountains. They found her alive thankfully. There is still a lot of elephants killing happening in Thailand for their tusks. - the mahouts have a pointy stick but use it mainly to control the elephants, not harm them. (Throughout the day we never saw the mahouts hit the elephants and the elephants didn't have any markings on their skin) We paid for 1 ...

... the cloud line. A personal highlight was visiting Nuki's village that has around 400 dwellings. We got to walk round the school, meet the children before the all important Thailand vs Rest of the World football match. We were heavily outnumbered, but had a huge height advantage. In the end no one managed to keep track of the score. We had a young goalkeeper who wasn't entirely interested in the match and would occasionally leave the net ...

... called Hollywood
which doesn’t in any way live up to that name. No wine lives here so I ended up
drinking Singha beer, one of the local brews which are very drinkable. We ended
up playing ‘Connect Four’, you know that game where you slide discs into a rack
and to beat your opponent you need 4 in a row.

One of the bar girls took a fancy to me, quite obviously
pretending I’m the best thing since sliced bread. ...

Enriching Encounters

... slow one-- but we just sang old songs and enjoyed the ride). To top off this once in a lifetime experience, it began POURING rain (as it always does at the least expected times here in Thailand rainy season). After being drenched from head to toe, the rain became no bother at all (just fun!) and our final stop of our trek was into big pond where we got to bath and swim with the elephants (they were so calm and content through this whole process, just amazing). Following ...
