Day 4 En Route to Cappadocia

Day 4 began the evening of Day 3, when we all hopped on the overnight train to Ankara. I have never ridden overnight on a train. It was quite an experience. After having had a hotel room to myself for two nights - Oh my God, I forgot to mention I'm getting my own room for four out of the twelve nights because there is an extra solo woman. Rather than give one woman a 2-week single, they give all of us a third. Sweet!

In any case, my first roommate experience of the trip was sharing bu...

Day 5 - Let's talk about language and rugs

A Little About the Turkish Language Turkish is an ancient language. If you look into the language, according to what I read before I came here, it was the language used by many of the first people to travel south from what I would jokingly refer to as the "Bekistans." It has similarities to those languages, Hungarian, Persian, Arabic and even some Native American languages. In 1923, Ataturk unified the language as well as the country and created an official alphabet, among many other things. ...

An influential church

... an hour from here, not the two Caesareas in Israel). This monastery was built into the hill in caves, like so many dwellings here. It's an amazing complex of rooms and tunnels and includes a huge communal kitchen, a school, and several worship spaces (our tour guide called the three we saw a church, a cathedral, and a chapel, though I have no idea how accurate that is or why). All ...

Cappadocia

I arrived here from cyprus 2 days ago, it was an **** of a journey/ first off i didnt think i was gonna make my flight as i had to get to north cyprus from the south east. It wouldnt normally of been am issue as its not that far but cyprus is a divided country, the turks invaded in the 70s and since then they have the north and the greeks claim the south, this meant it was a border crossing as the greek buses wont enter the other territories. In total to get where i am now it ...

The fairy castles of Cappadocia.

... Georgia. it was certanly the most European country travelling west and despite Azerbaijan wanting to be western that country is definitely Asian. The people we met in Georgia were so friendly and we thought that the local guide was being a bit over the top when he accompanied 2 walkers when they went up towards the Russian border when we were in the north at Mestia. He insisted that they carry their passports and to be ready to turn back if needed as ...

Babooshkas, the bus and a balloon trip

... drinks no less! We also had one babooshka and her two kids (in two seats no less)behind us and another little babooshka family two rows up. Neither babooshka was very concerned about what their kids were doing and promptly went to bed. So when the kids were scaling the windows beside us or coming up over the seat or peering through the seat or pulling on the seat or beating the seat I had to use my best Turkish grumblings to settle ...

... fertiliser. The valley floor has since eroded to leave the pigeon homes high up on the valley walls. The colour of the cliffs and the holes carved into them make a great view. Underground cities are hidden under much of Cappadoccia. they were used over hundreds of years by whichever race or ideolological group occupied the land above. The "cities" werw used in times of invasion to hide the women, children and livestock while armies ...

19.02.07 - 31.06.07 What a place this is! As the sun warms the earth I can feel Clara chomping at the bit to be set free. Well, come on, locked up in Istanbul for 6 weeks (many thanks Bige), unceremoniously taken to pieces and stuffed into a box at the hands of two very helpful Turks (thanks to the Aras cargo staff at Tuzla depot) before being placed in the back of a lorry and transported 600 miles. It wasn't until the 10th of March before she was reconstructed ...

Dahab, Istanbul, Cappadocia

31.01.07 - 18.02.02 I made it back to Istanbul on the 30th of January after a 24 hour journey from Dahab. I said my goodbyes to Tawfik and the gang at Marine Gardens in Dahab at about 2pm on the 29th. I really enjoyed my stay there and it was excellent value. I met some great people. Big shouts to Michael and Tobias from Switzerland. We became good friends over the course of the week regularly jogging in the morning sun and taking a dip in the sea at the Lighthouse in Dahab ...
