Very helpful staff - lady who spoke Spanish and gave us a lot of information when we arrived and a man who spoke excellent English. Free bus station pickup was great even though we didn't ask them till the night before. Rooms cosy and clean with warm blankets and nice rooftop area and lounge. Little bit noisy with the echo from the lobby but think that was due to our room overlooking it. Nice location, would recommend.

So Huaraz felt completely different to Lima: really nice in its own way but just a completely different vibe – more of a working town. I guess it's tiny in comparison and there are half as many people for starters! And it’s surrounded by the immense Cordillera Blanca: a white Andes mountain range that stretches on for 200 kilometres and …

Trekking in the Santa Cruz Valley

We headed back into the mountains to a place called Huaraz, so that we could go on a nearby 4 day trek that Helen had read about.

We had a couple of nights stopover to try and acclimatise after Lima, during which by far the most amusing thing to happen was Helen bursting into the room of 4 hammered Peruvians at 1 in the morning, who we...
