Travel Blogs by Travelers Who Stayed at the Number Eight Guesthouse Kuala Lumpur

An update: The beginning

We arrived in Bangkok on the eighth of June after a harrowing travel experience (27 on-flight hours) We spent four days at the Royal Benja Hotel and received less than desirable service (there was an actual paper clip found in my breakfast at one point.) The dollar is down and prices are up, Bangkok is way more expensive!!! On the twelfth of June we took a first class sleeper train from Bangkok to Hat Yai and had a very good night's sleep. In Hat Yai we took a second class train to Butterwort...

South East Asia, Kualar Lumpur, Taiping

Started off in Kuala Lumpur for a couple of days orientation and to meet the other volunteers at both Taiping Zoo and Zoo Negara. Moved to a small town called Taiping - no I've never heard of it either. Staying in a lovely house with 6 other people and we are all having a great time. There is a large sitting room, kitchen area with dining table (not that I will be doing much cooking). One of the volunteers - Andrew - loves cooking so that suits me down to the ground. He has even gone back ear...

KLCC and KL Tower

Today was the day of high rise buildings first I went to KLCC the place where the Twin Towers (Petronas Towers) are and as I was too late to get any of the free tickets to go onto the sky bridge I went later on to the KL Tower. Which is not as high as the Twin Towers but as it is located on the top of a hill it is higher from the sea level. OK? So later more as other people wanna use the free Internet in the hostel as well. As there where not enough sopping malls in KL there is posh and big o...

Forest and Birds

Today it was a bit foggy in the morning but then it got really hot and there wasn't the usual rain in the afternoon. Anyway I took the train to Kepong and then a taxi to FRIM the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia. This is rain-forest research and recreational area where they try to reinstate they rain-forest again. I did a nice walk unfortunately the canopy walk was closed. On the way I had to take a taxi from the train station and I had dispute with the driver about the price. It seems t...

KL

Upon arrival at the Puduraya bus station I was descended upon by taxi drivers. The 'Number Eight' hostel that I was staying at had provided walking directions to the hostel from this particular station, but I thought we were at a different one so I said ok to one of the taxi drivers and showed him the street name I needed to go to. "Twenty Ringits?! I'll go with you for 15." "No. Twenty Ringits. Standard price, standard price" "Alright, alright" But then, out of the corner of my eye I spotted...

KLCC

Arrived tired from the overnight train & found ourselves at the new KL Sentral station where nothing was open for breakfast apart from Mc Donalds & Starbucks - so we went hungry! We coaught the monorail which does not link up wirth the main station but does give good views of the city, to our guesthouse in Bukit Bintang. They were able to give us the room at 8am when we arrived so we could shower & change before heading out towards the Petronas Twin towers & the KLCC. We walke...

Kuala Lumpur here we come!

Today we leave the Cameron Highlands on a VIP bus! Such a nice bus! No seriously!! There were only 3 seats wide and they were like, well layzee boy chairs! They reclined and adjusted in all directions possible and so big you could nicely curl up and sleep! Why haven't we had these VIP buses before??!! Only a four hour trip this time, relatively short for the most of us and we head off for the dizzy heights of Kuala Lumpur (KL!) I love this city and will absolutely be back! After a 10 minute w...

The Strangest Day ....Ever!!!!

So I chickened out of getting up at 6am to line up for free tickets to get to the platform between the Patronus Towers. I didn't think you'd see that much as the viewing gallery is lower than the surrounding buildings! After breakfast myself, Hella, Bry and Maria head down to central market to visit the palm reader. Hella is the brave one that goes in first. I went with her to take notes as we knew we wouldn't remember everything she said! We opted for the horoscopes and palm reading. Hella w...
