Pretoria - local attractions, Gold Reef City

... For lunch we headed to Milkylane! as it was lunchtime I felt bad having ridiculously sweet pancakes so I went for the savoury waffle and an extra thick lime milkshake (after Paul insisting profusely I try one!), and Paul got the mint Aero pancakes – and wow my eyes bulged when the extra sauces came out! Chocolate, strawberry, butterscotch, caramel, maple AND golden syrup, honey... and all of the above were put on Paul's pancakes which already had loads of chocolate goodness ...

Remembering Hendrick

... see the tension in his face, arm and legs reduce. After the first time I played for him I asked him how he felt about the music and he answered, "I want to remember you." It didn't take me long to choose a selection of music to include with this entry, I found a song that I recorded at a Rivoningo devotion just a few days before Hendrick died. I had never heard the song before and since the lyrics are few I simply saved it as "Remember Me." Hendrick we will remember you.

... got into bed and were unconscious within seconds!! Today we've chilled out and been to the mall. In a sec I'm going to join Carlien by the pool in the back garden ;) Tomorrow we are going to a farm where they keep lots of game animals so I'm quite excited! While we are here we'll hopefully be doing a safari, lots of diving (including cage diving with great white sharks) and maybe the infamous bungy..........hmmmmm.........!! So all in all it's pretty ...

Second Week part 2

... as they merged together where I would have another car almost next to me trying to get by me before we were back to one lane. I think I was always able to slow, though at times I slowed very quickly, to let these people by. One time I ended up on the dirt shoulder but this time the shoulder was in good condition so no harm done. Going to supper through unfamiliar streets was always fraught with me making mistakes, mostly being in the wrong lane when I needed to make a turn ...

Tb or not TB?

... traditional c**emonial events involve the slaught** of a goat or cow. It is this close cultural and physical link with cattle, says Geoghegan, that puts rural communities at risk of infection. Anita Michel explains that people can become infected with M. bovis by drinking unpasteurised cow or goat milk and possibly by eating infected organs from slaught**ed animals. Cattle h**d**s, many of whom are young boys, are also at high risk as bovine TB can be transmitted ...

FINALLY IN AFRICA!!!

... of fresh fruit and yogurt, eggs, toast, pastrami, and coffee. It was interesting to hear about some of the different sociological norms present in South African society. Some things are very different here such as the employer/employee relationship. The 'nice' employer is not respected and often taken advantage of. Thus, many employers will strike their employees and constantly yell at them. Workers expect to be hit and disciplined. Employers are more respected when ...

Two Separate Worlds

... what is refered to as a common house, consisting of little more than four concrete walls, a bathroom, running water and electricity. The government gifts these houses (how generous) to members of the township and gives them sole ownership of the property (i.e. they have the right to expand, sell, or keep the property within their family). Although this has made some improvements to what is nothing short of a dire situation, there is a ...

... have no idea how much longer it can last. Adds a bit of excitement to long journeys I find. The constant suspense of will I be left stranded with no Phone along a 100 KM stretch of highway in the midday African Sun?! Well today my curiosity bit me in the ass. I ran out of petrol 2kms from town on my way to Hoedspruit. I was doing about 100Km/h and then the car just died. "Oh no! No No No!" I said out loud. The Car slowly but consistently started do ...

The continuing adventures..................

... down again. I'd have felt safer if I'd turned right at the compound gate!! The buses/ taxis here (mini-vans) are of the usual African mechanical standard, with seriously dented bodywork, driven by homicidal maniacs sporting the usual disregard for road rules or indeed any safety standards and crammed to the gills with people. They are designed to carry 12, however appear to actually manage about 25-30. One stands at the bus-stop giving the ...

Faszinierendes Suedafrika.

... Touren quer durchs Land.
