Av. Agostinho Neto 769 Maputo, Mozambique
We arrived today in Maputo, which is the capital of Mozambique. The sights, sounds and smells of the city came as quite a shock to us after being in relatively developed South Africa - this is truly a nation struggling to rebuild and develop, and we suspect that the people we meet with here will have a completely different perspective from what we have heard so far. We have rented a flat in the lovely Mozaika Guest House, complete with a private patio where we can watch the sunset and listen ...
Maputo, Mozambique aldemoyeSo now we are back in Maputo for another week of work. Last week proved to be very productive - we had meetings with the likes of MSF (aka Doctors Without Borders), the CDC, the Clintion Foundation, USAID. We also had the opportunity to visit a healthcare center in the outskirts of the city. The story here is shaping up to be very different from what we saw in South Africa. Whereas South Africa has a clear infant HIV diagnostic system that seems to be working fairly well, Mozambique is...well...
Maputo, Mozambique aldemoye... locals do, **** on the side of the street. It was fine the first time but the second time a security guard gave me the looks. The last time I ended up going to the public toilet which was fine but I was surprise to see that you had to pay.
Just before setting off, we were approached by a Mozambique guy, Joko, who was telling us a bit about Maputo. He was obviously some sort of tramp but he was quite nice, so when he asked for something, I gave him a coin; he gave me ...

... ourselves on Saturday and went out on a boat to an island about an hour ride off the coast, where we were treated to even more delicious seafood, beautiful beaches, blue water, and snorkeling. It wasn't the greatest snorkeling ever, though maybe I'm a bit spoiled ... but I did see some really scarily enormous fish and a sea turtle! And, they speak Portuguese! So maybe I do hope that PCI ends up expanding to Mozambique ... I know just the gal to head up the office ...
Maputo, Mozambique betuca... the ferry in Hong Kong a little because the air was so thick and almost foggy. Anyhoo, we hit the other side after I started chatting with some ladies with more baskets of something or other on their head. Essentially I took a photo and one of the ladies was particularly feisty and we started joking in Portuguese. Except to z and j it sounded like she was most peeved I had taken her picture without first contacting her agent. At Catembe the HIV AIDS awareness takes the form of ...
Catembe, Mozambique ashling... At which point I get very interested and we chit chat blah blah. Then she asks me what I do. I sheepishly say, err, finance lawyer. She then went to sleep. Jammer...! So Nelson was the next travel buddy: hugely intelligent guy, spoke fluent Portuguese having pretty much lived everywhere in Africa, and maily Angola and Moza... and, like Rose, he's one of these people the starry-eyed idealists waiting to be "converted" in Africa would hope to meet on their flight ...
Maputo, Mozambique ashlingThree days after leaving New York I arrived in Maputo, Mozambique. I was ecstatic to be here and more happy then ever to step out of the Airport and into the warm African sun. My layover in Joburg taught me one thing: Southern Africa in the winter can be really REALLY cold. I was in a t-shirt and when walking on the tarmac to board my flight I could see my own breath. The landscape was flat and brown, like a cold Midwestern winter ...
Maputo, Mozambique hewharris... br>of mini buses (there is a wonderful rule in Malawi, unlike Tanzania or
Mozambique, that only 15 people can be in a 15 person van, which makes
it quite spacious and semi enjoyable), and stayed for two days, in
order to get our Mozambiquan visa at the embassy there. The city is
really nice, clean, and there are stores that sell things that a person
would really want to buy, and the stores are indoors, not like stalls
outside, and there is a supermarket ...
