... to and the terrain gave him a lot of inspiration for his paintings. I got to the house bright and early next day along with a group of other enthusiasts, paid for my ticket and we had the most fascinating guided tour of the house and his studio, and then the garden. Apparently he kept canaries in a big cage in the bedroom and crickets in a small one, because he liked the sounds. It would drive me mad and I suspect might go some way to explaining why he was barking. ...

The descent that follows is quite technical. ... top there was a spring providing cold, drinkable water--nice! So we stopped, reloaded, did the usual photos and continued on.

I don't exactly remember the name of the town where we found a small, quiet bar that was actually open where we sat down to some sandwiches and a salad, but it seemed to me that we were even more lucky than usual to find a place open between noon and 2pm with it being Sunday. Now refuelled, we were good to ...

... get a chance to follow up on this conversation because the town was starting to block streets etc in preparation for the finish of the race we had seen earlier. We wanted to get to our showers so headed out for the third and toughest climb of the day upto the Col de Portillon. I think much of it was over 10% and was, in my opinion a col too far. At the top we moved from France into Spain, and are now tucked up in a pretty little village just inside the Spanish border. ...
