Hilltribe Trek - Day 2
... pretty ********sidering how sore and exhausted we were.
While we were eating, a man came to play their traditional string instrument (sounded a bit like an out of tune banjo). Then some Lisu schoolchildren came to dance for us. They did a couple of dances and then made us get up and join in.
I had my best nights sleep yet. Even though the bed was very firm, it was the softest mattress we had slept on since arriving.

Walking with monks, sort of
... enlightening! Although we still cursed and complained as we went, so much for contentment. The Wat at the top had the remains of a Monk buried there in 1992, and all sorts of shrines to honour him, along with the usual Buddhas and pictures etc. The hightlight was the stunning views and atmosphere up there, no tourists, and barely another soul. We've arrived in spider land...
... at our guesthouse, our first torrential downpour since Bangkok. Lovely and refreshing though..cooled the whole area down and made the temperature in our fan only room, a lot more pleasant. Spent the rest of the day chilling with beers in the dining area and taking pictures of the gigantic, size-of-your-hand spider in her web just a few metres from where we were sitting. Eek. One last thing to note - amazing curries! Yum yum ...
Caving, the Thai way
... in every aspect of Thai live'. No kidding. Even the natural wonder of these caves have been turned into a religious site. We continue down a smaller cave, about 350m long. Like the entrance cave, this one is artificially lit. The fluorescent lamps light the stalactites, but with cold constant light. Not the same as the flickering flame of a gas lantern. Relaxation in the Nest

One of the staff members, an older woman in charge of the morning and afternoon service, was one of the sweetest hotel employees we've ever come across. Not quite old enough to be a grandmother, but just as sweet, we nicknamed her Aunt Nellie and were close to asking her to name a price we could pay so that she could accompany us on the rest of our trip.
