I've just spent the past 6 nights on Lamu Island which is home to the Swahili people who are predominantly Islamic following the arrival of Arabs to the East African coast back in the day.
Lamu has a reputation for being one of the highlights of Kenya and having spent a few days there it is clear to see why although I did have a bit of an ordeal at the end of the stay which put a bit of a dampner on things.

Hi all,
After a night of no sleep we headed to Shella beach for the New Years Day dhow race... The place to be seen.
The beach was packed when we arrived and waited for the start. On the signal the crew sprint from the beach into the boat, opening the sails and heading off. The race lasted about an hour and a half and the atmosphere was electric at the finish line.
