Phnom Penh

16/01/09 We woke up early this morning to get ready for our flight, by now it's a routine for us, for early morning transport. During breakfast I nipped to a cash point around the corner to get some money for the departure tax. Unfortunately when I got back it sounded like someone was being ill and there was talk of hospitals which was a bit worrying! We caught our taxi to the airport which took about 1 hour in all the traffic, got checked in and had a sandwich before our flight. The plane tu...

From temples to touts

So we arrived in Phnom Penh and ended up staying longer than we'd have liked because we were waiting for our visa for Vietnam. We did visit the Killing Fields and S21 from the Khmer Rouge period and found the whole experience particularly depressing. The touts were pretty full on here too....tuk tuk mr etc etc.....so we moved on.....

Phnom Penh

Another bus journey loomed, this time though only a meager 6 hour journey back to Phnom Penh. The bus journey was quite uneventful but for the tears of one of the other travellers who was rather upset about something! We were again picked up by a tuk tuk driver when we arrived and taken to our hostel the oddly named "me mates place" On our first and only full day in Phnom Penh, we decided to go and see the killing fields. Having bought the book we both wanted to find out a little more about i...

Siam Reapista Phnom Penhiin

Killing Fields and amazing sunsets

... like the displaced people might fall through the cracks. I can only imagine the environmental hazards and problems that will arise as well. I'm glad we had the chance to enjoy our wonderful, relaxing sunset over the river while it's still around.

We dedicated a lot of our time to the atrocities that went on in the mid and late 70's so a big chunk of our day was overwhelming and sad. That said, I'm really glad we got to see everything we did, especially after ...

Elephants and temples, (but mostly elephants).

We also had a lot of time to research the trip, along with lots of other web-based research at Huxleys British pub and Freebird bar and grill. We also watched far too much tv and are now hooked to the following: CSI (Miami&amp ...

Ruins, Ocean and more in Cambodia

... to see the school/prison where the Khmer Rouge tortured the people before executing them at the Killing fields. This school was among the cruelest things I have ever seen since it is just a school, with a small playground in front and it is absolutely mind-killing to think of it as a torture place for many years. They had on display pictures from a Swede who got invited back in the days by the Khmer Rouge regime to visit Cambodia and was shown a country, where Communisms ...
