Delhi (en)counter

We'd been warned about the Indian-style toilets, and I knew I'd have to get the hang of them eventually, but hoped my first encounter with one would be after a nice night's rest, morning coffee, and a wholesome breakfast of bran-filled cereal. Instead, I had to rush to the first thing I could find upon landing at the Delhi airport, which was under a lot of construction and made it hard to find in time (something I ate on the plane?) All in all it wasn't so bad (everything came out all right i...

Dateline Delhi

So, here we are in Delhi. We received a very warm welcome at the Master Paying guest house. The stress of arrival was tempered by being picked up at the airport. That taxi journey was much less eventful than our subsequent auto-rickshaw rides. The fact that we didn't witness/ cause any road deaths is the most convincing evidence for a higher power. We can only liken it to dodgem car rides - same price, same top speed, and the same road etiquette! The pollution is also surprising given that al...

The Master Guest House 5*

If you enjoy the warmth of family or friends then you will be happy here! Most often fully booked confirms its popularity. As my first point of contact in Delhi, it could not have been better. Following several Emails before I left the UK I was collected from the airport, a great move, welcomed with tea and a room to refresh, fed the most scrumptious evening meal and offered a camp bed in the sitting room which I gratefully accepted. Sounds naff but it was comfy, quality and clean. The guest ...

Delhi: The Agony and the Ecstasy (Part II)

In our last post, we shared our first impressions of Delhi and some of the things we did at the beginning of the week. This entry will cover the second half of the week and include our thoughts about Delhi as we get ready to move on to Goa, a beach area in the South. Overall, we've had a surprisingly positive experience in Delhi and can easily say that we would highly recommend it to others. One of our takeaways is to get yourself out of the typical tourist scene, and visit some places that t...

The Wrap on India

As our thoughts start to turn to the final leg of our trip and returning to New York, it's surreal to have spent a month in a country that could not be more different than home. On the other hand, perhaps it makes sense afterall as India, just like New York City, has a way of getting under your skin. We have heard it said a hundred times and now we can attest to the fact that India is an all-encompassing experience full of challenges leading to equal if not greater rewards. More simply, as we...

WARNING WARNING - THIS IS LONG - so if anyone is bored, just skip ahead hee...(not you 3 kids though - Its compulsory for you and I'm going to be asking questions when I get home to check that you've read it!) I've written my feelings on Delhi but there is no doubt that no two people will have the same perspective of a visit to Delhi - that's why the following entry has been a tough one 'cos it's been hard just getting my thoughts together enough to be able to describe what we think... so her...

Erstklassig - hier müssen Sie einfach wohnen!!!

Welch tolle Einführung in Indien. Einfach, aber saubere und komfortable Zimmer, wunderbares Essen, unglaublich freundliche und belesene Gastgeber - Sie sollten auf jeden Fall die Hidden Delhi Tour machen!

Great Guest House

from IntrepidTraveler26
We stayed here for a couple of days both in the beginning and end of our trip to India. This proved to be a relaxing respite from the hectic daily life and experiences. The hotel can start to feel a bit crowded in the mornings when all 6 rooms plus the common room are filled with people and the only 2 bathrooms (yes, shared baths) are occupied. But it is extremely clean, especially compared with other hotels we came across in our travels, and the staff and owners are extremely helpful. It was very easy to arrange for transportation to and from train station/airport and their dining suggestions proved to be good ideas. We were looking forward to taking Avnish's hidden Delhi tour but he was forced to cancel last minute when his mother fell ill. One more note, the price listed on this site did not concur with the price we paid (here the average price is $12 whereas we paid RS 1,695 which is about $38). All in all, our experience at the Master Guest House was very positive and we would definitely stay here again.

Great service - but oh so hot

from Doodstar
We stayed a couple of nights at this Guest House. We were unfortunate that the weather in June was extremely hot and the air conditioner not quite so efficient which made our stay quite uncomfortable. Avnish was incredibly good at organising us...he took care of rail bookings and taxis and offered terrific tourist advice such as what to see and do. That part of our stay could not be faulted.....and to be picked up at the airport in amongst the hustle and bustle was wonderful. The service and foods were very good. As I mentioned we were just unfortunate that it was just so very very hot. Maybe we would have been better to stay in one of the rooms on the lower floor rather than the top room. Not sure if they would be cooler? Ask when reserving.

A real gem!

I stayed at the Master Paying Guest House for 2 days in early May and would highly recommend it for anyone seeking budget travel accommodations. The owners are extremely hospitable, the place is immaculate, the food is wonderful and the rooms are comfortable. The shared baths are clean and it was never a problem to use them because there are only a max of 4 people sharing at any given time. The Hidden Delhi tour is a must do - really should not be missed. The owners are extremely helpful with getting cabs, recommending shopping and eating locations and any other requests you may have.

When I return to Delhi, I will definitely stay here again!

Try the Hidden Delhi tour!

Our family reunion in Delhi was a great success partly due to the excellent advice and assistance from the Guest House staff. We were directed by Ushi and Avnish (the proprietors) to affordable and tasty restaurants, cultural events (a parade and dance exhibition), hassle free shopping spots and interesting sites. They provided cars, vans and advice on all other types of conveyances (i.e. rick shaws and taxis). The personal service from the staff was speedy, courteous and helpful. Avnish's Hidden Delhi tour (and our subsequent visit to Karim's Restaurant in the old city) was fascinating. It gave you an opportunity to see the Delhi most tourists never experience - especially Old Delhi, which would otherwise be a challenge to the average tourist.

The fact that all this is available at a reasonable cost makes it a winner. We highly recommend Master Paying Guest House!

Excellent Place to Begin a Visit to New Delhi and India

from photolandscape
Master Paying Guest House is an excellent choice by just about any standard. I flew from Portland, Oregon in the US to New Delhi--a rough 32 hours. Even though Air France lost some of my luggage and tied me up for quite awhile, MPGH's driver hung right in there and waited for me well beyond the time I should have emerged from the terminal, and took me straight to the hotel. Being exhausted, I really appreciated it.

What I liked best was--the true home feel of the place. The owners are wonderfully helpful, very worldly and well-informed. They arranged a good afternoon tour of certain areas of Delhi on short notice. They facilitated getting my bag from the New Delhi airport once it finally arrived and to the hotel.

Arriving in New Delhi after a 32 hour sojourn is hard. But MPGH makes you feel right at home. My room was fine--up on the roof--fine in all respects. The breakfast was excellent. I really enjoyed talking with the other guests--from Canada, Australia, Italy, Scotland. It was so calming and relaxing that I hardly wanted to leave the place in the two days and nights I was there.

I highly recommend it.

Excellent - do stay here!!!

What an excellent introduction to India. Basic but clean and comfortable rooms, wonderful food, amazingly friendly and knowledgeable owners - you must do the hidden delhi tour!

A cultural experience

from claky
If you are looking for a comfortable place to stay where you can be exposed to the cultural side of New Delhi then this is the place for you. Owners Ushi and Avnish are gracious hosts who make you feel welcome. On our stay we were invited to their daughters Indian dance recital to give thanks to their teacher and receive her blessings. What a treat! We were also invited to take part in a ceromony of thanks in their home along with Avnish's parents. Guests were also invited to a cultural show held at the United Nations in Delhi, we could not attend as I had a bad cold but other guests who attended said it was a great experience. All of the above incured no cost. Because of timing we could not take Avnish's Hidden Delhi tour which I have heard great reviews of. I was given great shopping tips from Ushi and this helped a lot. We ate most of our meals at the guest house along with the other guests and the food is great. Ushi and Avnish have got the balance of being with their guests but having their own space just right. They don't eat with guests but have tea in the morning and afternoon with them and are always their to help and advise you. I'm so thankful that I stayed with them and not in a large hotel as it allowed me to experience a side of Delhi that I would otherwise never have been exposed to. You must book well in advance as this is a very popular place to stay.

The review I have read here doesnt lie

Ushi and Avnish are great. Their house amazing. Their service, so good.

Clean rooms, great service, they are so so helpful. I stayed here first 3 days on one of the smallest and cheapest rooms they have ( 700 rupees single use) and then I came back and stayed 2 nights in a bigger room with airco and terrace( 1150 rupess, worth all of it).

They seem to be always fully booked, it was monsoon and the house was packed. You get to meet loads of people there, it is great.

Also please, if you stay, do the "hidden Dheli" tour, cause you will realise how much there is to see in Delhi, and Avnish explains it great!

Thanks to both of you to get me the chance to stay with you. Has been great, like at home.

See you next time .

Incredible Hospitality

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was my first visit to India and I chose Master Paying Guest House based on Frommer's recommendation, putting weight on hospitality over amenities. My instinct proved extremely useful and I cannot recommend this establishment more highly. Ushi Puri, who is the owner and hostess (together with her husband, who happened to be out of town when we were there), is an angel. She is passionate about helping travelers, and she comes through for her guests in the most amazing ways. When I got a bit lost in the train station trying to get tickets to go to Agra and called her for help, she instructed me to come back and while I was on my way she arranged a reasonably priced car with a driver/guide to take us where we wanted. While traveling in other parts of India I needed help in some complicated flight arrangements, and got extremely frustrating dealing with travel agents who kept promising things and never coming through. In desperation, I called Ushi, and she not only contacted a trusted travel agent, but she paid cash for my ticket based on my promise to pay her back upon my return to Delhi, sent one of the "boys" who work for her to fetch the ticket, and made long distance phone calls to consult with me along the way and to confirm that all was arranged. I witnessed her calming down a guest whose bags did not make it and who was missing crucial pieces of camping equipment and clothes for a scheduled trip; Ushi offered to lend the guest much of what she needed. I can go on and on. The guest house, on the second and third floor of Ushi and her family's house, is clean and comfortable. There are bathrooms that 2-3 rooms share on each floor. You ring a buzzer and someone immediately helps you, bring breakfast, call a cab, etc. Even if you typically stay in standard hotels, unless you know someone with travel-related connections in Delhi (or are extremely wealthy), it is worth giving up on some standard amenities to have such wonderful and helpful hosts.
