Breakfast, Beer, Cake but no Juanita!

... trek, I am finding myself constantly hungry... but clearly not burning as many calories as I was on the trek, so need to cut down a bit soon (ha ha!)... anyway, we went to a few tour operators and they quoted silly priced, rushed tours (one setting off at 3am, and spending only about 30 mins at colca canyon), so we had breakfast and decided to head back to the bus station and get a bus to Chivay (a town 3 hours away,. in canyon land, much nearer to colca canyon!)

Crazy ...

... improving groundwater supplies, soil quality and hence resulting in desert transformation. The only hitch was that nobody checked the weather conditions... the area has an average humidity of 20-30% which prevents it from raining very often - they average about 8 days of rain a year. The channels are still there as a permanent reminder... I found this almost as funny as a story I was previously told another time of the other Peruvian ...

The gratefulness that they showed made me know that I had made a good decision.

With just $20 per month, my parents will help ensure that Gisell has the sustenance she needs, supplies for school and medical care. They also advanced $50, which will be enough to fix the broken bed and install a shower and a sink. It does not take much to make a real difference. Anyone else have a $20 to spare?

... shrugged. I was pretty ****** though. We made our way to Cobanaconde the town where we would eat lunch and begin our trek. The best part about getting there was when we were told that we had an 1hr to wait for lunch and in the meantime we could look around the town. I thought breifly, what were you yelling at me about time for. But I took the time to see the cute little town and relax in the sun reading my new book, Shantaram. I exhanged my old book with ...

... hours of very uphill gravity defying walking that made your legs want to cry. The sun was beating down on us for most of the way and it was a real challenge, but one that I would happily undertake again in the future. Each time one stopped for breath you were able to soak in some of the most spectacular views I have ever been priviledged enough to witness. We were also lucky enough to see moe Condors, this is apparently very rare, so thanks Mother Nature!

It was tough ...

... a 3 metre wingspan. (another fact; condors are held as the symbol of higher/heavenly life in Inca culture). So the game goes; tourist stands cold and hopeful on the edge of a cliff, and waits for Condor to glide up on the thermal air currents from the canyon. Most amusing is watching others try capture them on camera (and of course trying to do this yourself). So we have seen the Condor and were ...

... way back so it´s almost a bed) and it was a nice double-decker. I asked how much it cost and the woman said 15 soles. Rats! The ticket I had already purchased was on a normal bus. Why didn´t I notice this counter yesterday? Because every bus station is chock full of different counters and the staff behind them just scream out the destinations so it´s all a blur. I only noticed this company today because they were screeching "Arequiparequiparequiparequipaaaaaa!" Anyway, I did ...

... the way from town. We then asked for “Home Sweet Home” hostel as listed in the guidebook. He still tried to take us to another hostel which he thought was “better”, but we insisted that he took us to our second choice. (Some taxi drivers are known to work with some hotels or hostels on a commission basis, dependent on the amount of travellers they could bring as potential customers to these hostels.) Anyway, we eventually arrived at “Home Sweet Home”.
