... good sail across to Sifnos - soo cute, original, greek and charming and no tourists to speak of. Evidently the PM and greek writers and artists holiday here. Charlie is keeping us amused and we are delighted he is now a fully fledged zoologist!. Tomorrow we pick up Gilly & Tim Deans from Paros so I am squeezing gear into lockers. Electricity is not available anywhere, so we are definitely camping with the solar panels and wind generator struggling to keep up. ...

We spent the day here relaxing on the beach. The water was the perfect temperature for swimming. The boys spent their day diving off the dock, swimming, snorkeling and fishing. Exploring Milos

The weather was very settled, in fact there was now very little wind and we thought we would stay a while and explore Milos further. An island rich in minerals it has been mined extensively for Alum, Sulphur, and Barium. Open cast mines scar the landscape every where. Milos is also famous for the discovery in an olive grove of the famous statue "Venus de Milo" by a local farmer.

We climbed the steep pathways of stone stairways to the top of the castle, passing other little churches and homes built on the hill leading to the castle at the very top. ... Parts of the catacombs are still being excavated so just a fraction was available to see on the tour.

From the catacombs I climbed up the hill to where the famous Venus de Milo (or Venus of Milos) was discovered. In 1820 a farmer in his olive grove discovered the statue which was quickly bought and then sold again. Eventually it ended up at the Louvre in Paris with much fanfare.
