Palermo, San Telmo to a Wednesday Milonga

Construction next door woke us up at 7.30am. The receptionist got them to stop for a few hours (they weren't supposed to begin until 9), but then it was loud again. No sleeping in. Met 2 film producers from LA who told us that Palermo was filled with studios and film people--it has a growing rep in S. America for film. They had returned from Chile and Patagonia, and told us about amazing lodges in the Andes. A company called Explora(?) operates sevearl lodges--4 day minimum, 100 guests, every...

... them greatly for the meal. I told them that if they come to London, they will have a place to stay if they want it. It was an experience that I really enjoyed and that probably this time last year would have taken me way outside my comfort zone. However, now an opportunity like that is something that I know needs to be grasped with both hands or you really miss out on the chance for something amazing. It seems like a very simple experience, but it´s one of the nicest ...

... is like a small bbq out the back of a house. Argentina is known for the the best steaks ever so we ordered 2 portions of something. Out comes a big plate witha slab of meat. Best steak ive ever had. So delicious. Went to some posh cafe, Tortoni, where some famous guy used to eat or something. Went in more protests. Its a common thing here, they are everywhere ...

Déception / Deception

... abandonned. And the heat was gruelling, so it was a huge deception and I completely blocked. I lost a whole day doing two things: finding a hairdresser and sending a parcel. At the post office, after waiting for an hour and a half in front of postmen not giving a damn about anything, I was rudely turned back because I didn't have my passport (to send a parcel?!). Once the passport in the pocket, it was another hour of waiting before finally dealing with a person treating ...

South America here we come - Buenos Aires

... and some (like some of the primates and the lions, who usually live in groups) were in their own enclosures and just looked a bit lonely and bored. As I say, not a bad zoo but could be better. Anyway, after the zoo we took a wee stroll round Palermo and went into the Eva Peron museum. Was really interesting, all I really knew about her was what I´d seen in Evita (this is Lorraine writing this in case you hadn´t guessed, Bri is NOT a fan of musicals). I ...

Buenos Aires Last Day

... of 60, so we ordered a very large bottle of beer and made the best of it. We did see a couple guys probably in there early 30's getting some tango action on with all the older ladies too. Very amusing. Even more amusing was the whole situation we found ourselves in. Evidently, all the people hanging out at this place dancing (about 20, I'd say) are obviously regulars, and most of them are single and come alone. Most of the ladies wear nice ...

Stop-Over in Europe!

... time settling on a spot highly recommended by one of Arik's previous bosses who had visited the city a week prior. Luckily it was only a few blocks from our hostel, but as per Argentine standards our meal didn't start until 10:15. The steak was big, tender, and full of steaky flavour! Yum! Not as cheap as the Lonely Planet suggests, with 12-20% inflation a year, but still very cheap for international standards. Two BIG steaks ...
